Plan the first walk from the station
York station is beside the western side of the historic city, but the walk to your room still depends on the address and bags. The National Railway Museum is on the other side of the railway from many central sights, so use the signed route rather than following a straight line on a map.
Staying inside the walls is convenient for evening walks. The station side makes an early departure simpler. In older accommodation, ask about stairs and the bathroom arrangement before treating two rooms as equivalent.
Walk a section of the walls well
The official visitor guide describes a circuit of about 3.4 km, using the raised walls and street-level sections. It is not one uninterrupted elevated walkway. Allow time for steps, narrow stretches and looking out over the city.
A shorter section can be enough. Choose access points that fit the rest of your day and follow closure notices for weather or repairs. If the raised paths do not suit your mobility, the surrounding streets still let you explore the gates and historic centre.
Make the railway museum a separate visit
The National Railway Museum offers free general admission and recommends advance booking at busy times. Some experiences are charged separately. Check the display and closure information rather than planning around a promise that a particular locomotive will be present.
For the Minster, look at the current sightseeing hours and ticket choice. A service and a sightseeing visit are different activities, and a tower visit can have additional conditions. Leave time inside if you decide to pay.
Continue north without an unnecessary return
York fits naturally between London and Edinburgh. The London to York route explains the journey from London; for travel onward, search York to Edinburgh on the actual day and compare the ticket restrictions.
Have lunch before boarding or bring something you can manage in your seat. Check luggage storage with your accommodation if the train leaves later than checkout. A booked departure is easier when collecting bags does not require another trip across the city.

You can enjoy the walls and National Railway Museum without a paid city bundle. Do not buy extra admissions simply to use a pass.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The walls are free, but a ticket for the Minster or another attraction has its own conditions. Check what an attraction pass covers before assuming it includes the tour or tower you want.
