Arrive in the right town
Check the destination on the ticket before comparing fares. A direct passenger catamaran from Split can land in Hvar Town. Jadrolinija's car ferry lands at Stari Grad, where you need an onward bus or taxi. That extra journey matters with luggage and after the last convenient bus.

One climb and an easier afternoon
Walk through the square and old lanes before heading towards Fortica while it is cooler. Allow for the slope and steps, then take time at the top. Adult fortress admission is €12. A €15 combined ticket covers the fortress and several town heritage sites, so compare it if the theatre and Arsenal are already in your plan. Hvar heritage tickets.
Back in town, have lunch and give the afternoon a different pace. A coastal walk and a swim can be enough; you do not need an organised trip to fill every day. Read the swimming access carefully, as rocky shores and ladders will not suit everyone.
An island outing needs a return plan
For the Pakleni islands, ask where the boat drops you and when it returns. A short transfer is not an all-day tour, and the last pickup time matters more than the shortest advertised crossing. Take water and anything you need for shade.
If wind disrupts a boat day, the town's heritage sites give you an alternative. Before an onward flight, return to the mainland with a sensible buffer, ideally the previous day when the flight is important or early. Around the harbour, you can walk to passenger boats and restaurants. Higher streets may offer more space but add steps every time you return. Compare the quieter coves along the coast with the actual walking route, and ask about late arrivals if your room is outside town.
Getting Around
Walk around Hvar Town and arrange island transport only for the places you intend to visit. Stari Grad ferry port is elsewhere on the island. A passenger boat to Hvar Town is often simpler without a car; a vehicle booking needs the car-ferry route and a plan for parking.
Eating for Less
Buy breakfast, water and picnic supplies around town before heading to a cove. For a cooked meal, compare a simple pasta or risotto with seafood dishes charged by weight. A waterfront drink can be a deliberate treat without making every meal a harbour-front meal.
Worth Paying For
Fortica for its harbour and island view if the uphill walk suits you. The theatre and Arsenal are another choice for a hot or unsettled afternoon; compare the combined ticket before paying separately.
Skip / Save Your Money
A boat excursion on every day of the stay. Leave one afternoon for the town and a reachable swimming spot, with no deadline beyond walking back for dinner.
