Understanding the Croatian Ferry Network

Croatia maritime transport operates on two distinct systems: state-run conventional car ferries and commercial high-speed passenger catamarans.

The Major Operators

  1. Jadrolinija: Croatia national ferry carrier operating large roll-on/roll-off vehicle ferries and several catamaran lines. Most reliable in bad weather and operates year-round.
  2. Kapetan Luka (Krilo): Private high-speed catamaran operator running sleek, fast passenger twin-hull vessels connecting Split, Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Mljet, and Dubrovnik.
  3. TP Line: High-speed catamarans running southern Dalmatian routes.

Foot Passenger vs Vehicle Logistics

  • Foot Passengers: You can buy tickets online via the Jadrolinija app or Krilo website. In peak season (July and August), buy at least 2 to 3 days in advance for popular afternoon sailings.
  • Vehicles: Car ferry tickets on Jadrolinija do NOT guarantee a specific boarding spot on a specific departure time on most lines. You must queue your car in the designated lane at the port at least 90 to 120 minutes before departure in peak summer.

Luggage Rules on Catamarans

Unlike airlines, catamarans do not weigh your bags. However, space in the entrance luggage racks fills up fast. Pack bags you can carry up the boarding gangway without assistance.

Key Hubs: Split and Dubrovnik

  • Split Ferry Port: Located directly opposite the central train and bus stations. Pier 10 to Pier 12 handle passenger catamarans; Piers 1 to 5 handle car ferries.
  • Dubrovnik Port (Gruž): Located 3 km northwest of the Old Town. Take local Libertas bus 1A, 1B, or 3 from the port to Pile Gate for €1.73 on contactless card.
