Buying & Using the Istanbulkart
- Purchase: Buy the yellow anonymous Istanbulkart from automated Biletmatik machines at any metro station, tram stop, or ferry pier for 130 TRY (€3.80).
- Top-Up: Machines accept cash Turkish Lira banknotes. You can use a single Istanbulkart for multiple passengers by tapping the card once for each person entering the turnstile.
- Single Fare: A standard journey costs around 17.70 TRY (€0.52).
Key Corridors for Visitors
- T1 Tram Line: The most useful line in the city. Connects Kabataş (funicular to Taksim), Karaköy (Galata), Eminönü (ferry piers and Spice Market), and Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia).
- Bosphorus Commuter Ferries (Şehir Hatları): Skip the expensive €25 private cruise boats. Take the public commuter ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadiköy or Üsküdar on the Asian side for 20 TRY (€0.60). You get tea served in tulip glasses, ocean breezes, and panoramic views of the Topkapı Palace skyline.
- Marmaray Subsea Rail: High-speed commuter rail crossing under the Bosphorus Strait through a subterranean tunnel, connecting Yenikapı and Sirkeci in Europe to Üsküdar in Asia in just 4 minutes.
