Using Istanbul public transport with an Istanbulkart
Choose the route before loading your card. Ordinary metro fares, airport journeys, ferries and transfer benefits do not all follow the same rules.
Plan the route first, then work out which ticket or card it needs. Istanbul's network is useful for sightseeing, but one headline fare does not describe every metro, ferry, airport connection and transfer.
Use the current Metro Istanbul network maps and identify the line, destination and interchange. A route with one fewer change can be worth choosing with luggage even if another looks slightly faster on a map.
Load for the journeys you will make
The physical card and the travel balance are separate. Read the machine's screen and official fare information to see what you are buying, how much usable balance remains and whether the service uses a different charge.
Do not assume an anonymous visitor card receives every transfer discount, refund or benefit available to a personalised local card. If several people share a card, check how repeated taps and transfers work before budgeting for a discount.
Keep enough credit for the return. A low balance is harder to solve at a crowded pier or interchange, and not every small kiosk sells or loads every product.
Follow the direction as well as the line
Save the destination station and the direction of travel. Check the platform again after every interchange. A familiar place name on the map does not mean every train from that platform goes there.
For a ferry, confirm the departure pier and route. An ordinary public ferry, airport connection and sightseeing cruise are different products even when their sales points are close.
Keep both airports separate
Search from the airport printed on the flight booking. The M4 line serves Sabiha Gökçen Airport, while Istanbul Airport uses a different corridor. Check operating hours and the final change to the accommodation.
Treat intercity tickets separately
An Istanbulkart does not buy an intercity YHT or coach ticket. For a high-speed train to Ankara, check the exact Istanbul station printed on the reservation and plan the city journey to it with a margin.
