Getting to Gozo by ferry

Gozo has two different ferry decisions for a visitor: the conventional Gozo Channel crossing from Cirkewwa and a passenger-only fast ferry from Valletta. The right choice depends on where you start, whether you need a car and whether your plan ends at Mgarr or continues to Victoria. Both sea routes finish at Mgarr, so a published crossing time is only one part of the trip. Start with the Valletta to Gozo route guide if you are comparing the complete journey.

Gozo Channel from Cirkewwa

Gozo Channel's passenger fare page currently labels €4.65 as the Standard Passenger Fare for passengers who are not Gozo residents. That is the ordinary daytime visitor category. The same page labels €4.05 as the Standard Passenger Night Fare, restricted to passengers leaving Mgarr after 20:00 and before the first morning trip in November through March. Do not use the night amount as the normal daytime budget. Children aged 3 to 12 are listed at €1.15, while children aged 0 to 2 need a free ticket.

The ticket terms say the total ticket price reflects one round trip. Standard tickets are valid for one round trip within six months, and foot-passenger validation takes place at the Mgarr passenger terminal on the start or return journey. Boarding is first come, first served. Buying online does not give priority, so do not build a tight onward booking around the assumption that a particular sailing is guaranteed.

The current schedule page shows approximately 25 minutes for the crossing and daily operation. Gozo Channel also carries vehicles, unlike the passenger-only fast ferry. Reaching Cirkewwa is a separate Malta journey. Malta Public Transport's Cirkewwa page lists routes including 41 and 42 towards Valletta, 222 towards Sliema and TD1 towards the airport. Check the MPT journey planner from your actual accommodation rather than counting only the ferry minutes.

Fast ferry from Valletta

Gozo Highspeed's current official fare page lists €7.50 for a standard adult one-way Valletta to Gozo ticket. Its FAQ gives an approximate 45-minute sea leg from Valletta and names Valletta Lascaris Wharf as the Malta terminal. The terminal page is worth opening with the booking because Ta' Liesse and Lascaris are waterfront names that can be confused with the upper city.

The fast ferry is passenger-only. The operator's FAQ describes bicycle limits and booking advice, and warns that unfavorable sea conditions can cause delay or cancellation. Check the current schedule and its same-day notices before committing to a flight, tour or final bus. The €7.50 amount is one way, so price the return separately.

Sliema and Bugibba departures

Gozo Highspeed also lists €8.50 one way from Sliema via Bugibba, with an approximate 75-minute sea leg, and €6.50 one way from Bugibba, with an approximate 30-minute sea leg. Transport Malta says the Sliema, Bugibba and Mgarr service began in May 2026. These products use different departure points and prices. Do not reuse the Valletta fare for Sliema, or assume that a fast-ferry ticket includes the bus to Victoria.

Build the full Victoria journey

A day trip to Victoria needs a connection after Mgarr. The current MPT route 301 page shows the bus between Mġarr and Victoria; the MPT journey planner supplies the date-specific stop, departure and travel time. Use route 301 as a separate Gozo leg after either ferry.

Allow for the Malta-side transfer, terminal walk, queue, sea crossing, Mġarr-to-Victoria bus or taxi and the walk to your first visit. Keep the return ferry visible before you leave Victoria. Conventional tickets cover a round trip but do not guarantee priority; fast-ferry prices shown here are one way. The Gozo / Victoria guide helps with the Cittadella day. A calm schedule with a margin is more useful than treating 25 or 45 minutes as a complete Valletta-to-Victoria time.
