Start in Victoria after the ferry

Gozo’s ferries arrive at Mġarr harbour. Victoria, also called Rabat, is inland, so take bus 301 for the onward ride rather than expecting the Cittadella beside the boat. The operator’s 301 timetable shows a ride of about 15 minutes; add waiting at the harbour and the walk from Victoria’s bus terminal.

Victoria is a useful base when you want the Cittadella, shops and buses close together. Xlendi or Marsalforn may suit you better for a coastal stay, with extra journeys for inland visits. For one night, staying in Victoria keeps the arrival afternoon simple.

Walk from It-Tokk to the Cittadella

Head along Republic Street to Pjazza Indipendenza, known as It-Tokk, then climb towards the fortress. The outdoor Cittadella is free to enter, even when the indoor attractions are closed. Take time for the walls and views; the uphill lanes are part of the visit.

For a paid introduction, the Cittadella Visitors’ Centre has displays and a short film in restored water reservoirs near the entrance. Standard adult admission is €5. Its ticket also covers the Nature Museum, Old Prisons and Gran Castello Historic House according to the directorate’s terms; the cathedral needs a different ticket. The centre closes on Mondays, with additional winter and holiday closures, so fit the indoor visit around its opening calendar.

Back in town, the lanes around St George’s Square give you another walk close to It-Tokk. Stop here for a meal or a drink rather than adding a distant attraction to a short arrival day.

Choose one further outing

With a second day, choose a coastal outing such as Xlendi or Marsalforn and leave time to return through Victoria. With only an afternoon between ferries, the Cittadella and old-town streets are enough. A private boat excursion is optional, not a requirement for seeing Gozo.

Try a Gozitan ftira from a bakery if you want a simple meal to take with you. Carry water for an outing and keep a meal break in the plan; crossing the island repeatedly can use more of the day than the map suggests.

Choose the ferry for your starting point

From Valletta, Gozo Highspeed takes about 45 minutes to Mġarr and costs €7.50 per adult one way. The ordinary onward bus adds €2 in winter or €2.50 in summer. Allow boarding and interchange time as well as the two rides.

Gozo Channel sails from Ċirkewwa, with a crossing of about 25 minutes and a standard foot-passenger round-trip fare of €4.65. You still need transport to Ċirkewwa and from Mġarr. Compare both options in the ferry guide and Valletta–Victoria route. If an early flight leaves Malta the next day, sleep on Malta for the final night.

Use the budget below as a chosen spending example. Replace the sightseeing allowance with the admission tickets or paid activities you choose, counting each cost once. Add airport and intercity travel separately, and count a shared private room once before dividing its cost.
