Start with one unhurried Old Town walk

Walk from the lower town towards Town Hall Square, then climb to Toompea for the views at Kohtuotsa and Patkuli. Put a café stop between the two parts if you are tired from travelling. The streets look close together on a map, but cobbles, steps and stops to look around make this a slower walk than the distance suggests.

Choose a room with that terrain in mind. Staying just outside the walls can make a late arrival or departure easier. If you book inside the Old Town, ask about stairs and the nearest practical taxi drop-off. Keep the first evening near your accommodation instead of crossing the city for a long list of sights.

Pick a second part of the city

Kalamaja and Telliskivi work well with Balti Jaam Market and time by the waterfront. Browse the food choices before buying; compare the portion and the whole meal rather than looking for a promised cheap stall. Leave room for a snack you notice along the way.

For maritime history, set aside a separate block for the Seaplane Harbour. The €22 adult ticket includes the hangar, temporary exhibition and listed museum ships. The €30 Maritime Museum combination adds Fat Margaret, with one entry to each site within a week. Buying the larger ticket only makes sense if both visits fit your stay.

Kadriorg is a different outing, with park time and a museum of your choice. You do not need to fit it into the same afternoon as the harbour. In wet weather, commit to one indoor collection and keep the walk before or after it short.

Arrive at the right stop

Tallinn Airport lists tram T2 towards the harbour and Kopli, and T4 towards Tondi. Use the stop nearest your actual accommodation. A one-hour QR ticket costs €2, and contactless payment is available on board. Follow the airport's signs for the stop, particularly when construction changes the walking route.

The airport, central coach station, Balti Jaam railway station and ferry terminals are separate places. If you are continuing to Tartu, compare a coach from the airport with a train from the city. Include the transfer and a sensible buffer after a flight.

Make a ferry day fit your time ashore

The Helsinki ferry guide explains the operators and terminals. For a same-day visit, choose the outward and return sailings before planning lunch and a museum. The boarding deadline comes before the ship's departure time.
