Turku Travel Guide
Turku is a good choice for two days of riverside walks, a castle visit and meals around the centre. The River Aura gives the stay a simple shape, but the castle, stations and ferry port are separate places to plan around.
At A Glance
Make the river your starting point
Take an unhurried walk along the Aura, stopping where the cafés or views appeal to you. For a first afternoon, the central riverbanks and Market Hall make an easier plan than trying to reach the castle, cathedral and archipelago in one sweep.
The official Turku introduction is useful for choosing between history, contemporary art and food. Aboa Vetus Ars Nova is an option when archaeology and art interest you; check its current exhibitions and ticket before adding it to the day.
Check the cathedral closure before making plans
Turku Cathedral is closed for renovation. The surrounding area can still be part of a walk, subject to work-site access, but an interior visit should not be promised. Look at the current visitor notice when choosing your dates.
For a substantial indoor visit, head to Turku Castle. Standard adult admission is €18. The autumn calendar normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, with the last admission half an hour before closing. Leave more than that for the visit itself. A museum ticket and a special guided tour are not necessarily the same purchase.
Check the station printed on the ticket
Helsinki–Turku trains can make the move in roughly two hours on suitable services. Track work changes some journeys. Search your date, check for a replacement bus and note whether you are booked to Turku, Kupittaa or the port. They are not interchangeable arrival points.
If the railway journey includes a bus, use the stop instructions supplied by VR. Do not follow an old article that says every Helsinki service ends at Kupittaa. Keep the first paid visit flexible until you know the arrival you have booked.
Use Föli when the walk stops being useful
Föli’s adult single costs €3.15 in the app or with contactless payment, versus €4.50 in cash on the bus. It allows two hours of travel; a night surcharge applies. Buy an app ticket close to departure because its validity starts at purchase.
For an airport or ferry connection, enter the full address in the current planner. A cheap room near the port can be less convenient for a city stay, while a central room may need an early bus or taxi for a sailing. Include that journey when comparing the totals.
Give a second day a different focus
After the castle and river, choose another museum or a longer lunch instead of collecting short stops. A summer archipelago outing needs its own outward and return timetable. If the weather is poor, keep the day in town.
Turku fits naturally with Helsinki and Tampere. Compare the complete journey before booking the next room. In the spending examples below, replace the sightseeing allowance with the visits you choose. Add intercity travel separately.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
A bed, simple meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
A private room, meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
More room for accommodation, meals and paid sightseeing.
Example for one traveller using one bed. These are chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace the stay and visits with your bookings. Add intercity travel, airport journeys and excursions separately. If a suitable individual bed is unavailable, use the full room price for your party.

Turku Castle
€18.00🛏️ Where to Stay
Stay near the Market Square or river for a first visit. A port-side room suits an early ferry more than evening walks in the centre. Check whether your train arrives at Turku or Kupittaa before choosing the final transfer.
🚇 Getting Around
Walk along the river and use Föli for longer journeys. An adult single is €3.15 with the app or contactless payment and lasts two hours; cash on the bus costs more.
Airport transfers
Föli line 1 serves the airport and centre. Check the current planner for the ride and final stop. An adult app or contactless single is €3.15 with two hours of validity; cash costs €4.50 and a night surcharge can apply. Set aside around 30 minutes for the ride as a planning allowance, then replace it with the time for your booked service or address.
🥖 Eating for Less
Use the Market Hall for a meal you actually want, then compare posted lunch menus around the centre. Riverboat restaurants are a choice for the setting, not a guaranteed budget meal.
Worth Paying For
Turku Castle’s adult admission is €18. Give the rooms and exhibits a proper visit, and check whether a guided tour carries a separate fee.
Skip / Save Your Money
The riverbank can fill a relaxed afternoon without several museum tickets. Keep a day trip into the archipelago for a stay long enough to handle the return transport.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Turku Cathedral is closed for renovation. Do not build the day around an interior visit from an older itinerary; choose the castle or another open museum instead.
