Choose the cathedral visit before joining a queue
Since 1 July 2026, Cologne Cathedral has charged for sightseeing entry. Services and personal prayer remain free for worshippers. For a visitor tour, buy the correct ticket instead of relying on an older free-entry tip.
The tower ticket page lists standard adult admission at €8. The tower entrance is on the south side, beside the cathedral shop; the Treasury entrance is on the north, facing the station. Decide which experience you want before moving between the entrances.
Keep the rest of the day simple
Store larger luggage before the visit. The tower has a small-bag limit, and the climb is not a good place to carry everything from a train journey. Leave time afterwards for the Rhine and the streets of the old centre.
For a smaller brewhouse meal, look for Halver Hahn, a rye roll with cheese. The name does not mean you are ordering chicken. It is one useful local option when you want a sit-down break without a large hot meal; include the drink and any extras in the total.
Where to Stay
Near Köln Hauptbahnhof suits a short stay with the cathedral and old centre close by. For a quieter evening, widen the search along a useful tram or U-Bahn route and include the last return before booking.
Getting Around
The cathedral is beside the main station, making it a practical first stop after storing luggage. Use local transport for farther neighbourhoods. A cathedral ticket does not include city travel or the train used to reach Cologne.
Eating for Less
In a traditional brewhouse, Halver Hahn means a rye roll with cheese, not half a chicken. It can be a smaller food choice, but read what comes with it and the drink price. Order the meal you want rather than guessing from the German name.
Worth Paying For
The tower climb costs €8 for a standard adult ticket and has its own entrance on the south side. Choose it if you want the climb and view; the Treasury uses the station side and is a different visit.
Skip / Save Your Money
You can enjoy the cathedral exterior and a Rhine walk without buying every interior add-on. Pick the part of the cathedral visit that interests you most and keep the rest of the afternoon for the city.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Sightseeing entry to Cologne Cathedral has required a ticket since 1 July 2026. Free entry for services, personal prayer or lighting a candle is for those purposes, not a way to avoid the sightseeing ticket.
