Choose a ticket valid between the cities and for the actual train. Regional RE, S-Bahn and ICE services have different journey times and ticket conditions. The 35-minute figure is a regional planning allowance.
Use these figures to plan. The price for your departure, luggage and ticket type may differ.

Choosing your journey

Regional trains make a practical city-to-city journey; allow around half an hour to 40 minutes on a suitable RE service. Faster ICE examples can be about 20 minutes, while S-Bahn journeys are slower. Tickets differ by train category.

A short journey with several ticket choices

Cologne and Düsseldorf can be separate bases or a day-trip pairing. Allow roughly half an hour to 40 minutes on a suitable regional express, checking the exact departure. Faster ICE examples can take around 20 minutes, while the S-Bahn is slower. DB's route planner shows the train category beside the journey.

The shortest time and the cheapest regional ticket may refer to different trains. Compare the journey you can actually board with the ticket you intend to buy.

Check the fare area and train category

A Düsseldorf city card does not automatically cover the journey from Cologne. Use the planner for the full route, and check whether your existing regional ticket is valid. The Deutschland-Ticket guide explains its usual exclusion of ICE and other long-distance services.

Regional trains can be busy at commuting times. Keep luggage manageable and allow time for the correct platform; do not board an ICE simply because it is the next train on the departure board.

City visit or airport connection

For a city visit, travel between Köln Hbf and Düsseldorf Hbf. In Düsseldorf, leave your bag before the river, old town or a meal around Immermannstraße. The Düsseldorf guide gives a two-day plan and neighbourhood choices.

For a flight, search the airport destination instead. Düsseldorf Flughafen and Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal are different stations, and a SkyTrain connection may form part of the journey. Add terminal travel and the airline's arrival buffer rather than relying on the city-to-city duration.

A return day trip works best when you choose one or two priorities and know your evening options. Keep a little flexibility for a longer meal or museum visit, and check disruptions before heading back to Cologne.
