Düsseldorf Travel Guide

Düsseldorf offers art at K20 and K21, Japanese food around Little Tokyo and an easy walk beside the Rhine. Carlsplatz is another useful place to stop for lunch. Choose your museum date carefully: the first Wednesday evening can save the admission charge.

Example spending plans

Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.

These are separate spending choices, not price or quality rankings. The alternative plan may have a lower total when its room, meal or activity allowances differ.

Sightseeing covers one K20/K21 combined ticket, usable for one visit to each. These are spending choices, not measured averages or available room offers. Replace the stay allowance with your full booking price, including tax and cleaning. Divide only a shared private room; meals and tickets remain per person. Add airport and intercity travel separately.

Two museums do not have to mean one rushed day

The K20 and K21 combined ticket costs €20 and allows one entry to each museum within a year, including on different days. K20 is at Grabbeplatz 5; K21 is at Ständehausstraße 1. Choose the collection that interests you first, then leave the other for another morning if you are staying longer.

Both museums offer free entry from 6pm to 10pm on the first Wednesday of the month. This is an evening window, so do not arrive in the morning expecting the same offer. Particular activities, including Playground, can still require a timed booking.

Lunch near the old town

Carlsplatz opens Monday to Saturday. Alongside fruit, vegetables and groceries, its food counters offer several kinds of cooked food. Browse before ordering and choose the meal you want; the market setting alone does not promise the lowest price.

After lunch, the Rhine promenade gives the day some open space. If your main food interest is Japanese cooking, leave time for Little Tokyo near the station instead of trying to eat a second full lunch at the market.

Where to Stay

For an art-led stay, look around the centre with access to K20 or K21. Near Hauptbahnhof suits trains and Little Tokyo. A room in the Altstadt may bring late-night street noise, so ask for a quieter room if you need early sleep.

Getting Around

K20 at Grabbeplatz and K21 at Ständehausstraße are separate museum sites. Leave time for the walk or local journey between them. The combined museum ticket does not include that transport.

Eating for Less

Carlsplatz opens Monday to Saturday with produce and ready-to-eat food from several cuisines. Choose a single lunch from the menus rather than turning every stall into another purchase. Little Tokyo is a separate food area closer to the main station.

Worth Paying For

The €20 K20 and K21 combined ticket allows one visit to each and is valid for a year, including visits on different days. It can suit two relaxed art sessions instead of forcing both buildings into the same afternoon.

Skip / Save Your Money

Use the first-Wednesday evening if it fits naturally, or keep the Rhine promenade as the free part of a daytime visit. You can see the river and old town without buying a cruise or tower ticket.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes

K20 and K21 are free from 6pm on the first Wednesday of the month, not every Wednesday or all day. Some special activities need timed tickets, so choose the actual exhibition or activity before arriving.
