Using Germany's Deutschlandticket as a visitor
The €63 ticket can suit a trip with several local journeys, but it is a monthly subscription. Check the cancellation date before buying.
The Deutschlandticket costs €63 per calendar month in 2026. It can be useful for a holiday with several regional train journeys and city transport, but the subscription terms deserve as much attention as the price.
Do not buy it expecting 30 days from your first ride. A visit spanning the end of one month and the start of the next can require two monthly payments.
What it covers
Deutsche Bahn's Deutschlandticket guide describes nationwide use on eligible local and regional public transport, including buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and second-class regional trains.
Long-distance ICE, IC and EC services are generally outside the ticket. Limited exceptions exist, so check the specific service instead of deciding only from the distance travelled. A short journey on a long-distance train is not automatically included.
Use the journey planner's local or regional transport filter, then inspect the result. Regional-only travel may involve more changes and a much longer day. Compare that with a separately purchased long-distance ticket if your holiday time is limited.
Read the subscription dates first
Under DB's published subscription rules, cancellation normally needs to reach DB by the 10th for the subscription to end that month. Buying after that point can leave you paying for the following month too. Other sellers may administer their subscriptions differently, so read the terms of the seller you choose.
Save the cancellation confirmation and check the end date. Deleting an app or removing a payment card is not the same as cancelling a subscription.
The ticket is personal. Carry suitable photographic identification and make sure the digital ticket is available before boarding. Do not assume a receipt or an unfinished subscription application is the travel ticket.
When it is worthwhile
Compare €63, or the full amount you will actually be charged, with the tickets your itinerary needs. A few city rides may cost much less separately. Several regional day trips may make the subscription attractive.
Include the practical cost of slower travel. If a regional-only route adds several hours, using it solely to avoid buying another ticket may leave you with very little time at the destination.
