Flying vs Rail Baggage Freedom

One of the greatest advantages of traveling Europe by train is the freedom from airline baggage fees and liquid restrictions. You can carry normal toiletries, scissors, and bottles of wine without restriction.

Standard State Railways (DB, ÖBB, CP, PKP, ČD)

  • Policy: Generous and unmetered. You can bring up to two large suitcases and one backpack per passenger for free. Bags are never weighed or measured.
  • Storage: Large suitcases fit in luggage racks at the ends of each carriage or between back-to-back seats. Backpacks and cabin bags fit in overhead metal racks above your seat.

The Exception: Budget Operators (Ouigo & Avlo)

Low-cost rail carriers operate airline-style baggage limits:

  • Base fare includes one hand bag (36 x 27 x 15 cm) and one cabin bag (55 x 35 x 25 cm).
  • Additional large bags require an extra €5 to €9 booking fee.
