Spain has built the second-largest high-speed rail network in the world after China. In 2021, Spain opened its rail infrastructure to international private competition. Today, four distinct high-speed operators run on the same tracks between Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, and Málaga, driving fares to historic lows.
The Four Competing Operators
1. Iryo (The Italian Premium-Value Operator)
Operated by Trenitalia with Spanish partners using sleek Frecciarossa 1000 trains capable of 360 km/h.
- Why ride: Extremely comfortable seats, wooden tables, reliable fast Wi-Fi, and generous luggage policies. Fares start from €18 to €25.
2. Ouigo España (The French Budget Carrier)
The low-cost subsidiary of France’s SNCF, operating double-decker high-speed TGV Euroduplex trains.
- Why ride: Rock-bottom base fares starting from €9 to €15.
- The Catch: Strict airline-style baggage limits. Base fares include only one small backpack and one cabin bag; extra bags incur €5 to €9 booking fees.
3. Avlo (Renfe's Low-Cost Brand)
Renfe’s purple low-cost trains, offering no cafe car and airline-style luggage restrictions, priced to match Ouigo.
4. Renfe AVE / Alvia (The State Operator)
The traditional state railway, offering the highest frequency of departures throughout the day and extensive connecting feeder routes across smaller provincial stations.
