Heidelberg's castle sits above the old town and Neckar, and the standard castle ticket already includes the lower funicular. Travelling farther up to Königstuhl is a separate purchase. The distinction makes it easier to choose between a castle day and a longer hillside outing.

Use the railway already in the castle ticket
The Heidelberg castle ticket costs €11 for adults. It includes a return on the lower funicular to Molkenkur, with the castle stop on the way, plus the courtyard, Great Tun and German Pharmacy Museum.
That is different from the upper railway to Königstuhl. Buy the longer mountain journey only if you want that destination too. The castle interiors require a guided tour, listed at an extra €6 for adults. Choose the tour language and time before committing to lunch elsewhere.
Leave time on both sides of the Neckar
Neuenheim’s weekly market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is a useful food-shopping stop if your walk crosses the river. On other days, keep a simple bakery meal or a café break in the plan rather than trying to fit every meal beside the castle.
The palace gardens are public during daylight, but the official notice warns of restricted areas on 20 September 2026 for the trail marathon. Give yourself another riverside or old-town route on that date instead of relying on access to the whole garden.
Where to Stay
Choose Altstadt for evenings in the old streets, or near Hauptbahnhof for an early onward train. These are separate areas. A station room needs a plan for reaching the castle and returning after dinner.
Getting Around
The €11 castle ticket includes a return on the lower funicular from the valley station to Molkenkur, stopping at the castle. It does not cover the upper railway to Königstuhl. Use the included section before buying duplicate transport.
Eating for Less
Neuenheim’s market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with produce, baked goods and regional foods. It gives a lunch-shopping stop across the Neckar if you want a change from the old town’s restaurant streets.
Worth Paying For
The €11 adult castle ticket is a useful combined purchase for the lower funicular and included visits. Add the €6 interior tour if those rooms interest you. Do not pay for the upper mountain railway unless you also want to go to Königstuhl.
Skip / Save Your Money
The public palace gardens and river views give you time outside the paid interiors. Some garden areas are restricted on 20 September 2026 during the Heidelberg Trail Marathon, so use another part of the walk that day.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The castle’s standard ticket covers the courtyard, Great Tun and German Pharmacy Museum. Interior rooms require a guided tour at an extra charge. Walking up the hill does not make the paid courtyard areas free.
