Allow for the journey beyond Heidelberg station
Frankfurt to Heidelberg is a useful day trip or overnight move. DB's route page shows fast services taking about 55 to 65 minutes, while a suitable direct regional journey takes around 1½ hours. Compare the train category as well as the departure time.
Heidelberg Hbf is outside the old-town core. Your travel day also includes the tram or bus, a walk and luggage storage. A fast arrival at the station does not put you at the castle gate.
Regional ticket or ICE fare
Choose the service you intend to use before buying a pass. An eligible regional ticket normally excludes ICE travel. Search regional-only journeys when that is the product you have; the fastest advertised time may belong to a train it does not cover.
For an ICE, compare its fare conditions and the flexibility you need. The rail ticket and castle admission are separate items. A coach is worth comparing when its stop, departure and full journey suit you, rather than assuming that a low promotional fare is available every day.
A day trip that leaves time to enjoy the castle
Arrive early enough to store bags or travel straight to the old town, then give the castle a proper block of time. The Heidelberg guide explains the €11 castle ticket, included funicular journey and current path closure. Avoid booking a timed tour too close to your expected train arrival.
Allow a meal and a Neckar walk before the return. If you want the hillside paths or a slower dinner, stay overnight. Check the evening return timetable before setting out and keep the last station connection in mind.
If the day begins at FRA airport rather than Frankfurt Hbf, search that precise origin. Do not add a city-station fare to an airport journey and assume the tickets cover the same route. The Frankfurt guide explains its two airport railway stations.
