Eger Travel Guide
Eger combines a castle above the old centre with an easy-going evening around Dobó Square. Stay two nights if you want both the town and a separate wine visit, instead of trying to fit the castle between an arrival train and dinner.

- Spring and early autumn are useful for town walks. For a harvest-season visit, book accommodation and a cellar appointment before assuming you can simply drop in.
Put the castle before the café stop
Give Eger Castle a proper morning or afternoon. The museum helps explain why the hill matters, while the grounds give a view back over the town. Full-price admission is 4,800 HUF; the guided underground corridor visit costs an additional 1,000 HUF. Reserve a suitable tour if that part interests you, and allow time to reach its meeting point. Afterwards, walk down into the streets around Dobó Square. It is a good time for lunch rather than trying to visit the castle hungry and rush through the exhibitions.
Decide what kind of meal you want
For a longer sit-down meal near the castle, look at Macok’s current menu. Its setting makes it convenient, but compare the total with a smaller lunch elsewhere if food spending is tight. Give a wine visit its own time
If visiting the cellars of Szépasszony-völgy, choose one with a tasting or service that suits you, then arrange how you will get back. There is no need to sample at every doorway. Ask what the tasting includes and whether food is available; wine alone does not replace lunch.
If wine is not your interest, use the second day for the centre, a museum or a relaxed café morning. Eger does not need to become a drinking trip to be worthwhile.
Plan the next travel day honestly
Eger and Lake Balaton are in different directions from Budapest. The connection usually takes you back towards the capital before heading to the lake. Where to Stay
A room near Dobó Square keeps cafés and the castle approach close. If arriving by train, include the final journey from the station when choosing the address. For a quieter night, check which side of the building faces bars or traffic.
Getting Around
Use MÁV’s timetable for the departure and any change from Budapest. The centre is compact, but the castle climbs above it and wine visits can be outside the town walk. Plan those separately.
Eating for Less
Look for a weekday lunch menu before the castle visit. Macok by the castle entrance is an option for a planned sit-down meal; read its current menu and service charge before reserving, rather than treating it as a cheap snack stop.
Worth Paying For
The full-price Eger Castle Museum ticket is 4,800 HUF. The underground corridor tour is listed as a separate 1,000 HUF extra, so choose it for the guided visit rather than assuming it is part of basic admission.
Skip / Save Your Money
An evening castle ticket has more limited access than the museum ticket. If exhibitions are the reason for coming, arrive during their opening hours rather than buying the cheaper option too late.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Choose a cellar by its wines, tasting format and appointment time. There is no useful rule that the first cellar is worse or that a deeper walk guarantees better wine. Arrange the return if drinking.
