- June and September can suit a quieter lakeside break, but swimming weather and boat services vary. July and August are busy holiday months; compare the exact dates and town rather than assuming a fixed off-season discount.
Pick the shore that fits your plans
Balatonfüred gives you Tagore Promenade, the harbour and a starting point for outings towards Tihany. Siófok is on the south shore, with a mainline railway station and seasonal boats across the lake. Plan a boat day around the return
BAHART’s passenger timetable changes during the season. For 7–27 September 2026 it lists daily services from Siófok, Balatonfüred, Tihany, Fonyód and Badacsony, but not every route runs at every hour. The vehicle ferry between Tihanyrév and Szántódrév is a different service from the town-to-town passenger boats. Arriving at the ferry pier does not put you in central Balatonfüred or Siófok. Ferry information.
Choose between a beach day and a lake walk
Esterházy Beach sits on Balatonfüred’s Tagore Promenade. During the bathing season it has organised access and facilities; outside the season its grounds are open as a public park. Check the seasonal service and ticket before planning a swimming day. Beach hours and access.
For a gentler day, walk the promenade and pause near the harbour. You can enjoy time beside the lake without paying for a beach or booking a boat.
Make lunch part of the outing
Halászkert on Zákonyi Street gives a named place to look at for a fish meal in Balatonfüred. Compare its current menu with a lighter lunch at a food stand, including drinks and sides. If a fish price is per 100 grams, ask for the likely serving weight before deciding. Halászkert.

Where to Stay
In Balatonfüred, compare the station-to-room walk with access to the promenade. In Siófok, check how close the room is to evening venues if quiet matters. Confirm beach access, parking and any accommodation tax in the total.
Getting Around
Book to Siófok or Balatonfüred by name. Their trains follow different shores. Passenger boats run seasonally; the Tihanyrév–Szántódrév ferry is a separate crossing with onward travel needed at both ends.
Eating for Less
For a fish meal in Balatonfüred, Halászkert on Zákonyi Street is an option to compare with the smaller waterfront food stands. Read whether fish is priced by weight and what sides are included before ordering.
Worth Paying For
Pay for an organised beach if you want its facilities and a full swimming day. Esterházy Beach in Balatonfüred publishes seasonal hours and ticket options; a promenade walk is a different, lower-cost outing.
Skip / Save Your Money
For a short stay, avoid changing hotels just to sleep on both shores. Use one base and take a boat trip only when the timetable leaves enough time at the destination.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A lake-view room does not necessarily include beach admission, and a boat ticket does not cover the bus from the pier. Put those extras into the plan before comparing two accommodation deals.
