Mývatn is worth a pause between eastern Iceland and Akureyri. Two nights let you spend a day among the lava formations, lake paths and geothermal sights without packing up again in the morning.

Stay two nights if the lake is a priority
Arriving from Egilsstaðir, keep the first afternoon for a short outing near your room. A second night gives you a full day without moving luggage and lets you choose outdoor stops around the weather. Reykjahlíð is a practical base, while rooms elsewhere around the lake may suit a quieter stay.
Look at the actual address when comparing accommodation. The distance to a shop, restaurant or pickup point matters if you do not have a car. A place described as Mývatn can be on a different side of the lake from the walk you want to do first.
Choose walks that feel different
Dimmuborgir has marked trails through lava formations. Select a route from the visitor information at the entrance and leave time to follow it properly. It is more enjoyable as a walk than as a quick photograph from the edge of the car park.
Hverir offers a contrasting geothermal landscape. Stay on marked paths and respect the barriers around hot ground. Skútustaðir provides another way to spend time near the lake. Rather than collecting every named site, choose two or three places with different terrain and take breaks between them.
If you want to add Dettifoss, check the current access road and conditions first. The two approaches are not interchangeable in every season. It is an extra outing beyond a simple lake circuit, and it should not make the day’s arrival dependent on rushing.
Book bathing for the package you want
Mývatn Nature Baths now uses the name Earth Lagoon Mývatn. The current operator website offers different packages and time-dependent prices. Choose the slot, changing facilities and included items that suit you. Do not rely on a price copied from an older Nature Baths article.
Bathing is a separate paid choice from the landscape walks. If you mainly want a swim and hot tub, compare the local municipal-pool option for the place you are staying. Natural hot areas are not an invitation to enter water outside designated bathing facilities.
Continue to Akureyri without another full circuit
The road to Akureyri gives you the option of a Goðafoss stop. Check the route and any tunnel payment before leaving. If you have already spent a full day around Mývatn, you can use the rest of the arrival day in town rather than adding another distant northern excursion.
Regional route 56 connects Egilsstaðir, Reykjahlíð and Akureyri. Read the actual stop times and arrange the final journey to your accommodation. It is useful transport when it fits your plans, but it does not provide a frequent circuit of the lake sights.

Reykjahlíð is useful for services and regional-bus access. Other rooms are scattered around the lake; check the drive to dinner and your next stop. The regional map marker uses Reykjahlíð, not every lakeside property.
🚇 Getting Around
The lake sights are spread out. A car or a booked tour makes a chosen circuit practical; route 56 connects towns but does not wait while you explore. Keep Dettifoss as a separate detour with a road check.
Airport transfers
AEY is a gateway for Mývatn, not an airport beside the lake. Check a dated route 56 connection towards Reykjahlíð and the onward journey to your room, or arrange a rental or transfer for the full road stage.
🥖 Eating for Less
Bring provisions from a larger town and top up locally. Confirm the cooking facilities before planning self-catering. On a walking day, a packed lunch avoids arranging the whole route around a meal stop.
Worth Paying For
Earth Lagoon Mývatn, formerly Mývatn Nature Baths, offers booked bathing packages. Compare the current slot and changing-room inclusions rather than relying on an old fixed entry price.
Skip / Save Your Money
Choose a couple of walks and one bath, if wanted. Adding every crater and the full Diamond Circle to a single transfer day leaves little time outside the car.
