Reykjavík works well as a city break or a gentle start to a road trip. Give the harbour, a museum and a swimming pool their own time, then collect a car when you are ready to leave town.

Build an Iceland trip around the time you have and the season you are travelling. Reykjavík and the southwest suit a short stay; the Ring Road needs longer driving days and real overnight stops in the east and north.

Choose a route that fits the season
For five days, concentrate on Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast around Vík. You can enjoy a city afternoon, waterfalls and a pool without reaching the far side of the island. The five-day plan returns west before the departure day.
For a longer summer road trip, the ten-day Ring Road plan adds genuine overnight stops in Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Mývatn and Akureyri. Ten days is a fairly active circuit, not a promise that every excursion will fit. Extra nights make room for weather changes and longer walks. In winter, choose a smaller area and more flexible accommodation instead of copying the summer circuit unchanged.
Snæfellsnes works as a separate western trip or a two-night extension. The Westfjords need their own planning; they are not an extra afternoon on the Ring Road.
Compare the whole car cost with the whole tour cost
A rental car can make sense for a couple or group visiting several rural places, but it is not automatically cheaper. Add the quote for all rental days, the cover you choose, any road-use charge, fuel or charging, parking and tolls. Include extra-driver, equipment and return-location charges where they apply. Count that vehicle total once, then divide it among the travellers sharing it.
Iceland introduced a broader kilometre fee in 2026. Rental companies can bill road-use costs according to their own rental arrangements, so ask whether the quote includes them and how the final charge is calculated. Do not add a second tax allowance if the full quote already includes it. The car-hire article explains the comparison with a worked example.
For a solo traveller on a short visit, a Reykjavík room and selected tours may be simpler. Check each excursion’s pickup point, time at stops and return. Regional buses are useful for some town-to-town trips, but their timetable does not reproduce a self-drive sightseeing loop.
Keep arrival airports clear
Keflavík, KEF, is about 50 km from central Reykjavík. Compare the airport coach, regional route 55, a taxi and a rental pickup for your actual arrival. Flybus’s BSÍ ticket and hotel-stop product are different purchases. Route 55’s destination and connections depend on the departure; do not assume every bus runs through to your central address.
Reykjavík Airport, RKV, serves Icelandair’s domestic flights to places including Akureyri and Egilsstaðir. A connection from KEF needs a ground transfer and suitable time between flights. An eastern or northern holiday can start with a domestic flight, but the arrival transfer and local transport still need arranging.
Spend on the experiences you want
Choose a municipal pool, a spa or both because they fit your trip. Reykjavík lists adult municipal-pool entry at ISK 1,500; premium lagoons have different facilities, packages and dated prices. A towel, swimsuit and transfer can change the comparison. See the bathing guide before booking several similar visits.
A kitchen can make breakfasts and packed lunches easier. Check the actual Bónus or Krónan branch and opening time, then buy what you can store. There is no dependable percentage saving for every basket. The grocery guide helps plan meals around the road rather than around a shop logo.
Check the day’s conditions before leaving
Use the official traffic map for road conditions and closures, the Icelandic Met Office for the forecast, and SafeTravel for travel alerts. Read the area and time affected, then change the route if needed. A road being open does not establish that a particular driver or vehicle is suitable for every condition.
Our plans do not require Highland F-roads or river crossings. Rental permission, vehicle suitability and current access must all be checked before any separate Highland trip. Read the budget as a set of choices
The euro room-and-meal figures on this site are adjustable spending examples, not measured averages or available offers. Published Icelandic tickets remain in ISK. Use the actual booking or payment conversion when bringing currencies together, and replace allowances with real costs rather than adding both. On a road trip, count rooms by hotel nights and the car once for the whole party.

Where to look for better value
A shorter route can reduce car days and fuel. Compare Reykjavík with selected excursions against a shared self-drive trip using actual quotes; no region is automatically cheap.
Where costs can rise
Remote rooms with limited alternatives, peak-date vehicle hire, premium spa packages and several organised excursions can raise the total quickly. Compare the complete trip rather than only the first room price.
Ways to save in Iceland
Choose fewer bases, use a kitchen when it suits your meals, and collect a rental car only for the days you need it. Compare the complete vehicle quote, cover, road-use charges, fuel and parking with tours for every passenger. Replace activity allowances with actual tickets and count a shared room or car once per group.
Flagship Destinations & Major Bases
The Golden Circle is a region of separate stops, not a town you can walk around. Choose a base near Selfoss, Laugarvatn or Flúðir, then give Þingvellir, the geyser area and Gullfoss enough time between drives.
Vík is a useful overnight base between the South Coast waterfalls and the longer drive towards Höfn. Keep the beach visit flexible, shop before leaving town, and choose one main walk rather than filling every daylight hour.
Akureyri gives a North Iceland trip a useful town base: cafés, a pool, harbour walks and regional connections. Keep Mývatn as its own destination if you want time around the lake instead of repeated return drives.
Regional Cities, Coastlines & Countryside
Höfn is a useful place to pause between the glacier coast and the Eastfjords. Use it for a proper overnight stop, with food and fuel arranged before the next drive, rather than trying to see the whole southeast from Vík.
Egilsstaðir is a practical East Iceland base for the Ring Road, lakeside walks and a separate trip to Seyðisfjörður. Give the Eastfjords a real overnight stop instead of describing them while placing the hotel in Akureyri.
Mývatn is worth a pause between eastern Iceland and Akureyri. Two nights let you spend a day among the lava formations, lake paths and geothermal sights without packing up again in the morning.
Snæfellsnes is a good choice when you want a smaller road trip with coastal walks and fishing towns. Give the peninsula two nights if possible, with one day free of the long drive to or from Reykjavík.
