Use Vík as an overnight base

The drive from the Golden Circle or Reykjavík becomes a full day once you stop at waterfalls. Arrive with time to find your room and eat. If you have two nights, use the second day for a chosen activity or a slower outing nearby, rather than driving far east and returning simply to keep the same booking.

Vík itself has useful food and accommodation services. An address advertised as South Coast may be well outside the village. Check the map, access road and evening food options before booking. A room with a kitchen can help on an early departure, provided you buy supplies before the shop closes.

Give the waterfalls time, and a way to shorten the visit

Skógafoss can be viewed from the lower area without committing to the stair climb. The upper route is an extra walk, not a necessary part of seeing the waterfall. At Seljalandsfoss, follow access notices and leave the path behind the water out of your plan when conditions make it unsuitable. Waterproof clothing is more useful here than a tight sequence of timed stops.

Parking charges can apply even when there is no separate admission gate. Read the signs at the lot you use and keep the registration details handy. A remembered free-entry description should not become a promise of a free car visit.

Treat Reynisfjara as a changing coastal visit

Check the warning signs and permitted areas when you arrive. Stay well back from the water and follow any restriction or closure. Other people standing close to the surf do not show that it is safe. If access is restricted, use another activity; do not move around a barrier to reach the basalt columns.

Dyrhólaey is a separate outing with its own access conditions. Choose it for a clear spell and keep time for the approach and walk. Neither place needs to be squeezed into the last minutes of daylight after a long drive.

Plan the next day before leaving town

The road to Höfn passes Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón. Allow a full day for that stage. A substantial hike and a booked glacier or boat excursion can need another night in the southeast; they are not quick stops simply because they sit near the same road.

If using the regional bus, inspect the dated route 52 timetable and the distance from its stop to your accommodation. Do not assume there will be a later service if you get off for a walk. For a shorter holiday, the return to Reykjavík works better than trying to reach the eastern half of Iceland.
