Pick the main stop before leaving Vík
Route 1 continues east through the South Coast towards the glacier region. Buy the food you need before leaving Vík and check fuel or charging along the chosen route. The basic drive is only part of the day once you add walking and parking.
Skaftafell is a useful place for a selected walk. Choose the route according to current trail information and the time you have. A guided glacier outing is a separate booking with a meeting time and equipment requirements; do not treat it as an interchangeable short viewpoint stop.
Leave time for the lagoon and the final drive
Jökulsárlón can be enjoyed from the shore, with a separate ticket if you choose a boat trip. Follow the marked areas and coastal warnings. Read the national park’s payment instructions at the car park, and keep any eligible same-day parking discount distinct from tour admission.
Continue to the actual accommodation address after the visit. Höfn and rooms nearer the glacier sights can be a substantial drive apart. If a long walk is your priority, sleeping closer to it can be more useful than insisting on reaching town that evening.
Do not assume the bus reproduces these stops
Strætó route 52 provides transport along the South Coast, including the Höfn corridor. Check the dated service and stop locations. Getting off for a hike does not guarantee another convenient bus later the same day.
