Höfn & Southeast Iceland Travel Guide
Höfn is a useful place to pause between the glacier coast and the Eastfjords. Use it for a proper overnight stop, with food and fuel arranged before the next drive, rather than trying to see the whole southeast from Vík.
At A Glance
Stop in Höfn before turning north
Höfn gives the eastern end of the South Coast a practical overnight base. After a day on the road, settle in and take a short harbour or shoreline walk if conditions suit. Keep the evening for food and rest rather than making another long return journey to a sight you passed earlier.
The guide covers Höfn and the southeast, but these are not interchangeable hotel locations. A stay near Skaftafell may suit a morning hike; a room in Höfn is better placed for town services and the next stage towards the Eastfjords. Plot the address before booking and check where you can eat after arrival.
Choose the main activity along the glacier coast
From Vík to Höfn, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón can fill the day without a long list of extra stops. Pick a walk suited to your time and the current trail conditions. A guided glacier outing needs its own check-in, equipment and activity time. Walking near a glacier viewpoint does not make an independent walk onto the ice appropriate.
At Jökulsárlón, shore views and a boat tour are separate choices. If you book a sailing, work backwards from its meeting time and leave room for a slower drive. Follow the marked areas around the lagoon and coast; do not climb onto floating or stranded ice for a photograph.
Count parking by vehicle
Vatnajökull National Park lists ISK 1,110 for a car with five or fewer seats at its paid Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón areas. Its same-day arrangements include a discount when another eligible paid area has already been visited. Follow the payment instructions for the exact car park and registration, rather than assuming one payment covers every stop automatically.
Keep these charges in the car budget once for your group. A boat or guided walk is normally a separate admission per person. Neither belongs silently inside a per-person road fare.
Prepare for the Eastfjords stage
The Höfn–Egilsstaðir guide follows the main coastal route. Check the road and weather before leaving, and do not accept a shorter mountain-road suggestion from a navigation app without checking its surface, access and rental terms. Fuel and meal stops should be part of the day, not something to solve after you are already low on both.
Without a car, route 52 reaches Höfn from the South Coast corridor. Check onward travel separately: arriving by bus does not establish a convenient public-transport circuit around the island. If buses do not fit the time you have, a smaller regional plan may be the more enjoyable trip.

Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
A bed, simple meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
A private room, meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
More room for accommodation, meals and paid sightseeing.
Chosen example for one traveller using one individual bed, if available. These are adjustable allowances, not measured averages or offers. Divide only a whole-room cost when sharing. Replace the activity allowance with actual visits. Car rental, cover, road-use charge, fuel, parking, tolls, excursions and airport travel are additional. Zero local transport means no allowance selected, not free travel. Published ISK tickets remain separate.

Ticket options🛏️ Where to Stay
Choose Höfn for town services and a harbour walk. A room near Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón reduces travel to those sights but can be far from Höfn. Check the exact address, dinner arrangements and late arrival instructions.
🚇 Getting Around
The town is small enough for short walks. The glacier coast needs road transport, and the regional bus does not wait for sightseeing. Check the complete route 52 journey before relying on it.
Airport transfers
KEF is the international gateway for this road-trip plan, several driving stages from Höfn. Use the Reykjavík, Vík and Höfn route guides to plan the journey; do not treat the airport as a short local transfer.
🥖 Eating for Less
Buy food in town for the next day and check cooking facilities at your stay. If a seafood meal is a priority, compare menus and book that one meal; there is no need to make every stop a restaurant visit.
Worth Paying For
Book a guided glacier walk only with a clear meeting point, equipment list and suitable difficulty. Give it a substantial block of time instead of adding it between two long drives.
Skip / Save Your Money
You can enjoy Jökulsárlón from the shore without buying a boat trip. Parking is a separate vehicle charge, and access depends on local conditions.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A southeast accommodation listing can be far from Höfn. Check the exact location before booking a morning glacier activity.
