Follow the coast rather than an unchecked shortcut

This road calculation follows the main coastal route through the Djúpivogur and Reyðarfjörður areas. Navigation software may offer a shorter inland road depending on its settings. Inspect the proposed route instead of accepting the shortest time automatically, especially in poor weather.

Leave Höfn with food, fuel or a charging plan and an idea of where to stop. Choose one or two places for a proper break. Visiting every side fjord would make a different, longer trip than simply reaching Egilsstaðir by evening.

Give East Iceland a night of its own

Egilsstaðir is the overnight base for this stage. Settle in, eat and leave a longer lake or forest outing for another day if you have the time. A side trip over the mountain road to Seyðisfjörður needs its own conditions check and return allowance.

The following Mývatn stage should not be hidden inside this day’s drive. If your plan describes the Eastfjords but books the room in Akureyri, it adds another substantial journey and removes the time intended for the east.

Public transport needs an independent plan

Do not assume the South Coast bus arrival in Höfn connects into a convenient same-day service around the Eastfjords. Check current regional options for the exact towns and date. For an East Iceland stay without driving the full circuit, compare a domestic flight to Egilsstaðir with a pre-arranged local transfer.

Count the car once for your group

This is a self-drive stage, so there is no separate passenger fare. Add the full rental quote, chosen cover, road-use charges, fuel or charging, parking and any tolls to the trip once. If a charge is already included in the rental quote, do not add it again. Divide the shared total only after those costs are clear. The car-hire guide gives a worked comparison.

The basic road journey between the named endpoints is roughly 220 km, calculated from a road-network map. It excludes sightseeing detours and is not a live route recommendation. The map summary above shows straight-line separation. Check the actual address, current road conditions and weather forecast before departure; allow extra time for stops and conditions.
