Make this the return day, not a race to the airport
Head west on Route 1 and choose any missed stop according to the day’s conditions. If you have already seen the waterfalls, a straightforward drive with a meal break is a useful way to end the road section. There is no need to repeat every stop simply because you pass the turnoff.
For the five-day itinerary, sleep in Reykjavík after this drive. That leaves the following day for the airport journey. A flight from Keflavík does not depart from central Reykjavík, and rental return, refuelling or charging, shuttle arrangements and airline check-in all take additional time.
Choose one optional outing
If access is suitable, a short coastal or waterfall visit can fit before leaving the area. Avoid combining a long morning excursion with several stops on the way west. If you want a Reykjanes or Blue Lagoon visit, check the current access instructions and booking separately rather than assuming it is a simple diversion.
On arrival, leave the car where your booking permits and keep dinner close to the room. You may be able to return the vehicle before the final city evening, but compare the return location and onward transfer first.
The bus is a different arrangement
Route 52 serves the South Coast corridor. Select Vík and Reykjavík in the current planner and confirm the departure stop, luggage and final connection to your address. A bus arrival in Reykjavík still needs an airport transfer if you are continuing to KEF.
