Begin with the harbour, not a long drive

After an overnight flight, a short first day is useful. Leave your bags, walk between Harpa and the old harbour, then stop for lunch. You can add the streets around Tjörnin if you still feel like walking. A booked excursion immediately after landing leaves little room for a delayed flight or a tired driver.

Harpa is free to enter during building opening hours. That does not include a concert seat or its paid attractions. Use the public spaces as part of a waterfront walk, and check the event calendar if music is a reason for your visit. On a windy afternoon, a museum followed by a café can be a better plan than a long exposed walk.

Choose a pool close to your day

Vesturbæjarlaug is useful if you are already west of the centre. Reykjavík’s adult municipal-pool admission is ISK 1,500. Bring a towel and swimsuit, follow the shower instructions, and ask staff about access arrangements if steps or changing facilities matter to you. A neighbourhood pool offers swimming and hot tubs; it is a different purchase from a large spa package.

Keep the next morning for Hallgrímskirkja and the streets below it, or choose a museum that interests you. A tower visit, museum admission and pool entry should each earn their place in your budget. You do not need all three to fill a pleasant day.

Match your room to how you will travel

For a short stay without a car, a walkable address can save repeated rides. Check the actual tour pickup point before booking: a central hotel address does not mean every coach stops at its door. With a rental car, compare parking charges and access instructions as part of the room price.

Use Strætó for a longer city journey. The ordinary adult single in the capital area is ISK 690; use its current payment guidance rather than assuming this covers the countryside. On a mainly walking day, a pass may add little value. Shopping near your room is also simpler than crossing town for a small grocery saving.

Leave through the right airport

Keflavík is about 50 km from central Reykjavík. Flybus lists ISK 3,999 for an adult journey to BSÍ and ISK 5,299 for its hotel-stop product. Choose the actual destination and included luggage when comparing transfers. The old Airport Direct website currently redirects to Flybus, so do not build an arrival plan around an old Airport Direct stop.

Domestic Icelandair flights use Reykjavík Airport, RKV. A connection from KEF therefore involves a ground transfer, not a walk to another gate. For the next road day, use the Golden Circle journey. For a trip focused on the north, compare the Akureyri options.
