Finish the peninsula before the return drive
Use the morning for a nearby walk only if it fits the weather and your departure time. If you are staying in Stykkishólmur, the basic return goes through the Borgarnes area. From Arnarstapi, Hellnar or another base, calculate the route from that address rather than using this town-to-town estimate.
A final circuit of the western coast can add many stops and a different road journey. Make that a separate day if it is a priority. A simple return with lunch can be a welcome break after several days of sightseeing.
Keep Keflavík outside the city estimate
Reykjavík is the endpoint here. Keflavík Airport lies farther southwest, and returning a rental car adds its own steps. A final night near Reykjavík or the airport makes an early flight easier than leaving a remote peninsula room before dawn and depending on a clear road.
If returning the car in Reykjavík, check how you will reach your room and the airport the next day. If keeping it, confirm the overnight parking and full return instructions, including fuel or charge requirements.
Check the entire bus connection
For public transport from Stykkishólmur, inspect route 58 to Borgarnes and the onward route 50 towards Reykjavík. Confirm the date, waiting time and stop locations. A missed connection may not have a quick replacement. An arrival at a Reykjavík bus stop still leaves the journey to your hotel or KEF.
