Give the peninsula its own place in the trip

Snæfellsnes sits west of the main Ring Road. It works well as a separate two-night stay or an extension after a longer circuit. Adding it to the last day before a flight creates a long drive with little time for the places you came to see.

Choose where to sleep before arranging the circuit. Stykkishólmur offers a harbour town on the northern side; Grundarfjörður is another northern base. Arnarstapi and Hellnar put you near the southern coast. The regional map marker is in Stykkishólmur, so use your accommodation address for the actual journey.

Split the north and south sides

Use one day for the north-coast towns and viewpoints that interest you, then another for the south and western end if time permits. Kirkjufell is a landscape stop near Grundarfjörður; seeing it from an appropriate viewpoint is different from climbing the mountain. Do not turn a photograph stop into an unplanned ascent.

At Arnarstapi, the coast path gives views of the basalt formations and cliffs. Choose a stretch that suits the wind, surface and your mobility, then return with time to spare. Stay on marked routes and keep clear of cliff edges. You do not need to walk every section to enjoy the coast.

Djúpalónssandur is another coastal visit, with access and conditions to check on arrival. Follow barriers and stay away from the surf. In poor weather, shorten the outdoor plan and use a town stop or the national-park visitor facilities that are open.

Plan ordinary stops as carefully as viewpoints

The West Iceland visitor site lists public toilets across the peninsula, including facilities at Arnarstapi and by the Stykkishólmur harbour. Check the opening information for the place you use. A café meal can be a welcome part of the day, but your comfort breaks should not depend on finding an open restaurant at every scenic stop.

For a rural stay, confirm whether dinner or a kitchen is available. Pick up food before leaving the town where you shop. This is especially useful on a day when you want to spend several hours outside without returning to a main service centre.

Return with enough room for the airport

The Reykjavík connection needs a proper travel block. For most flights, a final night near Reykjavík or Keflavík makes the next morning easier. Compare the outward journey before deciding whether a car, a town-to-town bus trip or an organised excursion fits your plans.
