Choose a northern or southern base first
This route uses Stykkishólmur as the Snæfellsnes endpoint. It follows the main approach through the Borgarnes area, not a full peninsula sightseeing circuit. A booking in Arnarstapi, Hellnar or Grundarfjörður needs a different final approach, so enter the actual room address.
For two nights, travel out, settle in and use a short local outing for the first afternoon. Keep the following day for the coast and places you most want to see. This avoids spending most of a day trip driving out and back before you have had a proper walk.
Do not use the shortest line around the peninsula
Road surface, conditions and your destination matter when choosing the approach. Check the route in the official traffic map. A scenic loop with several coastal stops should be planned separately from the basic transfer to town.
Shop and take a meal break where it fits your journey. Before arriving at a rural stay, confirm the kitchen or dinner arrangements and the time you need to check in.
Without a car
The revised regional network links Reykjavík with Borgarnes on route 50 and Borgarnes with Stykkishólmur on route 58. Check the complete connection and operating day before booking a room. Other peninsula towns can need another service or transfer. These buses do not provide a frequent loop around the coastal sights; an organised tour may suit a short visit better.
