Reykjavík to Golden Circle Region: travel options

Approximate direct distance: 52 km • Travel distance depends on the route and transport you choose.

Choosing your journey

Selfoss is about an hour from Reykjavík by the direct road in good conditions. A day visiting Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss is a much longer circuit; allow the whole day and finish near your booked room.

A transfer to Selfoss is different from the sightseeing circuit

This route uses Selfoss as the overnight base in the Golden Circle region. The direct road east from Reykjavík is useful for reaching a room or changing buses. It does not pass all three main Golden Circle sights, and the approximate hour in the table is for that basic transfer only.

For the sightseeing day, plan Þingvellir, the Geysir area and Gullfoss in the order that suits your room. Give the walks and lunch their own time, then finish in Selfoss, Laugarvatn or Flúðir according to your booking. The regional guide explains those different bases.

Keep the main stops manageable

At Þingvellir, select the parking area for your intended walk and pay the vehicle fee. At the geothermal area, stay behind barriers and allow time to wait without relying on an exact eruption interval. Choose the open Gullfoss viewpoints according to the surface and weather.

If the day is running late, remove an optional bath or extra attraction before shortening the main visits. Reaching a rural guesthouse before dinner service ends may matter more than one further photo stop.

Without a car

An organised tour from Reykjavík can link the main sights and return you to the same room. Strætó route 51 connects Reykjavík and Selfoss in the revised network, but is a town-to-town service. Price and plan the tour separately instead of assuming a regional bus ticket covers the sightseeing circuit.

Count the car once for your group

This is a self-drive stage, so there is no separate passenger fare. Add the full rental quote, chosen cover, road-use charges, fuel or charging, parking and any tolls to the trip once. If a charge is already included in the rental quote, do not add it again. Divide the shared total only after those costs are clear. The car-hire guide gives a worked comparison.

The basic road journey between the named endpoints is roughly 60 km, calculated from a road-network map. It excludes sightseeing detours and is not a live route recommendation. The map summary above shows straight-line separation. Check the actual address, current road conditions and weather forecast before departure; allow extra time for stops and conditions.
