Begin with the park map
Killarney National Park extends well beyond the town. Choose an actual start point and route rather than assuming you can walk from your room to every lake and attraction in one outing.
The park's things-to-do guide describes a five-kilometre return lakeside walk from an entrance about 5.5 km from town. The journey to that start is additional. Look at terrain and access as well as distance before deciding whether to walk, cycle or arrange transport.
Separate Muckross Abbey from Muckross House
Muckross Abbey is a ruined friary within the park. Muckross House is a different building and visitor experience, with its own ticket arrangements. A free abbey or lakeside visit does not include every interior, farm attraction or boat trip nearby.
Choose a route that leaves time to stop and enjoy the place. If hiring a bicycle, ask about permitted paths, locks, return time and what happens if the bike has a problem. Park paths and approach roads have different users; do not assume the whole outing is traffic-free.
A Kerry excursion needs a full return plan
For the Gap of Dunloe or a Ring of Kerry tour, read the actual route, time away and meeting point. A package may combine a boat, vehicle and walking section, or include only one of them. Confirm the part you will do yourself and whether it suits your mobility.
Keep the weather in the decision. A low-cloud day may suit woodland or a shorter lower-level outing better than a long scenic drive. Follow park notices and leave sensitive ground and wildlife undisturbed.
Trains and the airport
Dublin trains use Heuston. Some Killarney journeys are direct, while others change at Mallow; use the dated result rather than assuming a direct departure at any time. The Dublin to Killarney guide explains what to compare.
At Kerry Airport, buses serve the terminal, while Farranfore railway station is about 1.4 km away. Include that transfer and the wait for a train before comparing rail with a bus or taxi.
For a flight from Dublin, the railway does not take you to the airport terminal. Add the separate airport journey and a substantial delay margin. If the timings are tight, return to Dublin before the departure day rather than treating the last possible train as a safe connection.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Farranfore railway station is about 1.4 km from Kerry Airport's terminal. Also, a trip to the Ring of Kerry is not the same as a short park walk from Killarney.
