Choose an upper-town or lower-town base
A lower-town stay reduces the steps involved in a railway arrival. An upper-town stay makes early and late walks in Città Alta easier, but check the room's approach, luggage arrangements and the last useful transport. The best choice depends on your departure time as much as the view.
Piazza Vecchia, the nearby church area and part of the Venetian walls make a sensible first walk. Leave time to sit down instead of climbing every tower and hill in one afternoon.
Read the airport ticket coverage
The ATB tourist-service page describes the local Airport Bus and airport-inclusive tourist tickets. These differ from a coach to Milan. Use the current ticket list to compare an individual journey with the 24- or 72-hour products, including luggage and the funicular rides you plan.
Check the destination on the bus, not simply the number of people waiting. An early flight also needs a timetable check from your actual stop; a daytime service frequency does not establish the first departure.
Enjoy the free public spaces carefully
The walls and public squares give you a good visit without a long ticket list. Church interiors, towers and museum rooms have their own arrangements, even when the façade is beside an open square. Read signs and respect services before entering.

Where to Stay
Città Bassa is useful for the railway station and airport bus. Città Alta puts you near the older streets but may involve cobbles, slopes and restricted vehicle access. Ask about the final approach to the room.
Getting Around
ATB Airport Bus connects Bergamo airport with the city. Check whether your ticket covers the airport zones, luggage and funiculars. A city-only ticket is not the same as an airport-inclusive tourist product.
Eating for Less
Try casoncelli or polenta dishes if you want a regional meal. Compare the full menu and portion size, and use a bakery lunch if you prefer to spend more on dinner.
