Choose one part of the Dolomites for a short stay. Val Gardena, the Tre Cime area and Cortina are different bases with different transport networks. A useful valley base and a few suitable walks usually leave more time outdoors than driving between distant photo stops.

Choose a valley, then choose the walks
Val Gardena is useful for outings around its local lifts and trails. Dobbiaco and nearby towns suit a different plan around Tre Cime. Cortina sits in another part of the range with its own transport. Do not book a room on the assumption that every Dolomites sight is a short bus ride away.
For a few days, list two or three walks that match your fitness and keep an easier option for poor weather. The hut and weather guide explains why calendar season alone is not enough to judge a route.
Check what your pass covers
The Südtirol Guest Pass is offered by participating accommodation in South Tyrol. It differs from the purchased Mobilcard and excludes many tourist lifts and special seasonal services. Validate it as instructed for each covered journey.
Ask your accommodation for the exact pass name and compare it with the bus or lift you need. Keep paid lifts, excursions and hut accommodation as separate budget items.
Reserve the Tre Cime approach
The 2026 shuttle 444 arrangements require online booking for both the outward and return journeys between Dobbiaco and Rifugio Auronzo. The service is scheduled from 31 May to 11 October, with tickets advertised from €16. A Guest Pass does not make this shuttle a free ride.
The toll-road approach also requires payment and a reservation. Choose the arrival time and walking route before booking. The usual circuit can take around four to five hours, and the hut is above 2,200 metres; leave enough time for conditions, breaks and the return departure.
Treat huts and weather as part of the route
Confirm the hut you plan to use is open and whether an overnight reservation is needed. Carry food, water and appropriate layers even if the valley starts warm. Follow local closures and turn to a lower or indoor plan when conditions do not suit the walk. A lift still running is not a judgment that every nearby trail is suitable.

Tre Cime walking circuit
€0.00Booking and rates: The walking trail itself has no admission ticket. Access by the toll road or shuttle requires separate payment and reservation. The 2026 shuttle season is 31 May–11 October; check the weather and both booked journeys.
Ways to save: The public outdoor visit described here has no admission ticket. Paid interiors, transport and guided visits are separate.

Choose accommodation close to the buses or lifts for your planned walks. Ask about the exact guest pass, meal options and late arrival. A South Tyrol transport benefit does not automatically apply to a stay in Cortina.
Getting Around
South Tyrol's Guest Pass covers its listed regional network from participating stays. Many tourist lifts and special shuttles cost extra. Check the named bus or lift and its operating season before building a zero-transport budget.
Eating for Less
A packed lunch can help on a day when huts are closed or widely spaced. When eating at a rifugio, check opening, meal times and payment arrangements before relying on it as your only food stop.

A lift or shuttle that makes your chosen walk practical, or a qualified guide for a route beyond your skills. Compare the route, equipment and cancellation terms rather than the headline price alone.

Trying to visit Seceda, Tre Cime and another distant valley in one short day. Stay in one area long enough to choose a good-weather walking day.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A cable car ticket does not guarantee safe walking conditions at the top. Snow, storms and closures can change a route even when the valley is sunny. Choose the walk first, then the lift or bus that serves it.
