Core Planning

Ventspils Travel Guide

Ventspils combines a working port, an Old Town and a beach area with family attractions. Choose a base for the part you will use most, since the coach station, beach and ferry terminal are different arrival points.

Split the town and beach into separate outings

The Old Town and castle make a useful first focus after arriving by coach. Leave time for a meal and a walk before going farther towards the beach. On a family trip, choose a small number of stops rather than crossing the whole town between activities.

Use the [official town map](https://www.visitventspils.com/app/uploads/2025/12/web_eng_karte 2026.pdf) to place your room, the beach and the port. A short straight line on that map may not be the available walking route through a working harbour.

Pick the castle ticket for the season

The Livonian Order Castle at Jāņa iela 17 has a €5 standard adult ticket from May to October and a €3 winter ticket from November to April. The visitor information lists the combinations and concessions separately.

Prices involving the local Vents promotion are not ordinary euro prices. Check eligibility before using a discounted amount in your budget. If the castle is your only museum, you may not need a pass covering several venues.

Leave room for weather and children

A beach walk is a flexible choice, while paid indoor attractions need their own hours and tickets. Before promising several activities to children, check their age or height rules and decide which one matters most. Keep meals and a rest between larger outings.

On a windy day, shorten the exposed part of the walk and choose the town or museum instead. Renting bicycles can help cover more distance, but confirm the return time and choose paths everyone can manage.

Arrive at the correct station

The Riga–Ventspils guide describes the coach journey. The local arrival page places the coach station at Kuldīgas iela 5. Buy for the exact boarding and arrival stops, then add the final ride or walk to your room.

If travelling by ferry, follow the terminal and check-in instructions on that ticket instead. A coach arrival estimate does not include a ferry connection. Give that transfer its own time allowance, especially with a vehicle or bulky luggage.

For a wider trip, compare an inland stay in Kuldīga or the different coastal feel of Liepāja. Check the dated coach between towns before committing to another hotel move.

Example spending plans

Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.

Example for one traveller using one individual bed. Chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace them with your bookings. Add intercity and airport travel separately. Replace the attraction allowance with chosen admissions rather than counting both. A dorm or individual bed is not guaranteed; use the whole room quote if that is what you book.

Check sources before booking

Livonian Order Castle

From €3.00
Booking & Rates: Check the included museums before buying a combination, and read each site’s opening day.
Ways to save: Standard adult €5 May–October or €3 November–April. Promotional Vents amounts require the separate scheme.
Verdict: A useful indoor choice close to the Old Town and a manageable focus on a windy day.

🛏️ Where to Stay

For a short coach visit, stay near the Old Town or on the town side of the beach area. Check the exact walk to your chosen attractions instead of booking by a general seaside label.

🚇 Getting Around

Coaches connect Riga with Ventspils in roughly three to three and a half hours. Local buses help with longer journeys; their frequent city services are not the intercity timetable.

🥖 Eating for Less

Buy snacks and water before a beach afternoon, and compare a town meal with seasonal beach outlets. A kitchen can help with children, provided the room includes usable facilities.

Worth It

Worth Paying For

The Livonian Order Castle costs €5 for an adult in May–October and €3 in November–April. Choose the museum combination only if you will reach the other included sites.

Skip & Save

Skip / Save Your Money

Keep the beach, park walks and outdoor sculptures as flexible parts of the day. Paid rides, science exhibits and water attractions need separate budgets.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes

Check the port or terminal printed on a ferry booking. The city coach station at Kuldīgas iela 5 is not a substitute arrival point for a ferry check-in.
