Šiauliai Travel Guide
Šiauliai is worth a stop for the Hill of Crosses, but keep some time for the city itself. A museum and a walk through the centre make an overnight stay more useful than a hurried detour with luggage.
At A Glance
Give the Hill of Crosses enough time
The Hill of Crosses is in the countryside outside Šiauliai, roughly 12 km from the city by road. You need an outward journey, time at the site and a way back. If your train arrives late in the day, stay overnight rather than squeezing the excursion into a narrow gap before another departure.
The district tourism office's arrival guidance describes buses from Šiauliai bus station in the Joniškis direction. Ask for Domantai, then allow for about 2 km on foot. Check the day's departures and return options at the station. Do not mistake the time you reach the bus stop for the time you reach the hill.
Choose the transfer that fits your group
A bus can suit travellers happy to walk and work around the timetable. With small children, heavy rain or limited mobility, compare a taxi or organised transfer. Agree whether the driver waits, how long the visit allows and what the return costs. A cheap outward trip is less useful if you have no comfortable way back.
Carry water and a weather layer. The visit involves outdoor paths, and the hill is a place of devotion and remembrance. Give other visitors space, keep to the paths and avoid moving objects for photographs.
Spend the rest of the day in town
Return to the centre for lunch and a walk along the pedestrian streets. You do not need a long list of attractions to make the stop worthwhile. Pick a museum that interests you and leave the evening free before the next journey.
The Photography Museum lists a €5 standard admission ticket. It also sells a separate terrace-only visit; check the product if you want to see the exhibitions. This is a useful alternative when the weather makes a long outdoor afternoon less appealing.
Keep stations and sightseeing separate
Vilnius to Šiauliai is a rail journey into the city, not a direct service to the Hill of Crosses. The onward train towards Klaipėda can fit a westbound trip after an overnight stop. Allow time to collect bags and return to the platform.
If you are travelling with luggage, ask your accommodation about storage before arrival. Do not build a short excursion around a storage facility you have not confirmed. A central room may be more practical than the lowest advertised price on the edge of town.
Budget for the excursion you choose
Keep the Hill of Crosses transport separate from everyday city spending. A bus outing and a private transfer lead to very different totals, particularly for a solo traveller. Divide a shared taxi quote only among the people actually travelling, and check whether waiting is included. The plans below are adjustable examples for the city stay, so replace them with your room and meal choices.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
A bed, simple meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
A private room, meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
More room for accommodation, meals and paid sightseeing.
Example for one traveller using one individual bed. Chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace them with your bookings. Add intercity and airport travel separately. Replace the activity allowance with chosen admissions rather than counting both. An individual bed is not guaranteed; use the whole-room quote if that is what you book.

Look around the central pedestrian streets if you want an easy evening walk. If your stay revolves around onward travel, compare the walking route to both the bus station and railway station before booking.
🚇 Getting Around
Use the train for intercity travel and the bus station for the Hill of Crosses outing. The Domantai bus stop still leaves about 2 km on foot; it is not the entrance to the hill.
🥖 Eating for Less
Eat in town before or after the excursion and carry water for the walk from Domantai. A central café or supermarket is easier to plan around than relying on food being available beside the hill.
Worth Paying For
The Photography Museum is a useful indoor choice, with a €5 standard ticket. A terrace-only ticket is a different product, not admission to the whole museum.
Skip / Save Your Money
Avoid making a short stop depend on an unplanned rural bus connection. Stay a night or arrange the transfer if your onward train leaves little room.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The Hill of Crosses is outside Šiauliai. Check the return bus before leaving town, and agree a pickup if you choose a taxi instead of assuming one will be waiting there.
