Vilnius to Šiauliai: travel options

Approximate direct distance: 186 km • Travel distance depends on the route and transport you choose.

Choosing your journey

The train gets you into Šiauliai in roughly two and a half hours. A visit to the Hill of Crosses needs a separate journey from the city, so plan it before choosing an onward ticket.

Take a direct city train

LTG Link offers direct trains from Vilnius to Šiauliai. The dated examples checked took 2 hours 18 minutes to 2 hours 42 minutes. Allow about 2½ hours for an initial plan, then use the selected departure for the exact timing and fare.

The Hill of Crosses is another journey

The train arrives at Šiauliai railway station, not the Hill of Crosses. The district tourism office describes a bus from the city bus station towards Joniškis, alighting at Domantai and walking about 2 km. Check the return bus before leaving town. A taxi or arranged transfer can be easier if walking or waiting would be difficult.

Choose a workable connection

Allow time to get from the railway station to the bus station and find the departure bay. If the day depends on several separate tickets, build in a margin rather than relying on the shortest connection a map suggests. A night in Šiauliai gives you more freedom for the excursion and a museum visit.

Avoid counting the same cost twice

Book the train for your passenger and class, then add the Hill of Crosses transport separately. A city spending allowance does not cover every possible taxi outing. If continuing west, compare the Šiauliai–Klaipėda train after you know how much time you want in the city.

Plan the arrival

Continue with the Šiauliai guide when choosing a base and local visits. Add this journey separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above compares the city centres in a straight line; the route you travel can be longer.
