Give the old town a morning

Monaco-Ville, often called the Rocher, is the raised old-town neighbourhood around the palace. Come for the lanes, the cathedral area and views over the harbours. You do not need to book an interior to enjoy the walk, though the palace adds context if its visiting season fits your dates.

Begin near Place de la Visitation, walk through the lanes towards the palace square, then make your way around the old town at your own pace. Keep a little time for a quiet side street instead of following only the busiest route between the coach stop and palace. Return downhill for lunch or stay on the Rocher after checking the menus.

Reach the top without an unnecessary climb

CAM lines 1 and 2 serve Place de la Visitation. Line 2 is the useful option to check from the railway station area. From Place d'Armes, the Rampe Major is the uphill walking approach. The palace describes this as about ten minutes on foot, but allow more if you stop or find slopes difficult.

The Monaco to Monaco-Ville connection explains the local bus choice. It is a journey within Monaco, not an intercity transfer. A bus can save your energy for the old-town lanes, which still include uneven surfaces and changes of level.

Separate the square from the palace ticket

The Grand Apartments cost €13 for standard adult entry. The published 2026 visiting season runs from 30 March to 15 October, with specific closures and possible changes for official functions. Read the operator's latest notice before relying on online ticket sales.

The interior uses stairs and is not accessible to wheelchair users. That restriction does not describe every outdoor part of Monaco-Ville: plan a suitable public route separately and ask the visitor service about your particular access needs.

Choose an afternoon

If you want the Oceanographic Museum, give it a proper block of time rather than adding it just before the last train. For an outdoor day, descend towards the harbour and decide whether to continue to Monte-Carlo and Larvotto. You can also stop after the old town; there is no need to collect every district in one visit.

In wet weather, check that your chosen interior is open before heading uphill. On a hot day, take water and build in an indoor or shaded break. Neither a steep approach nor a long exposed viewpoint stop is essential to enjoying the neighbourhood.

Most short visits work well from the same Riviera room. If you want to stay close to the old town, confirm the exact address and luggage access. The budget examples are adjustable allowances, not evidence of room availability on the Rocher.
