Follow the river into the old centre
Start at the station, walk towards the Fyris River and make the cathedral your main morning stop. Leave time to look around the surrounding streets rather than treating Uppsala as a quick photograph between trains. The hill towards the castle adds some effort; choose it when the weather and your energy suit it.
Uppsala Cathedral normally welcomes individual visitors free of charge. Check services and other events before settling on an exact arrival time. A guide leaflet is optional, and special visits can have their own charges.
Decide whether this is a day trip or a base
A day from Stockholm works well when you want the cathedral, river and lunch. An overnight stay makes more sense when you want a second visit or a calm start before flying from Arlanda. You do not need to travel south to Stockholm just to reach that airport.
The local arrival guide gives roughly 18 minutes for the airport train and about 50 minutes for bus 801. Add station access and waiting. Check the complete airport fare: a rail ticket can include a station charge that a normal city ticket does not.
Keep regional tickets separate
UL's 75-minute adult ticket costs SEK 40. It is useful when the bus saves a long walk, but it is not a pass for the Stockholm region. For the return train, check the operator and ticket conditions instead of boarding whichever train happens to arrive first.
Regional trains and commuter trains can use different Stockholm stations and take different times. Confirm Stockholm Central or Stockholm City on your chosen service. With luggage, that detail matters more than saving a few minutes on a timetable.
Leave a little space in the plan
Keep the last hour free for a café, a missed stop or the walk back. If you want a second paid visit, check its opening day before buying the train ticket. Use the room and food figures below as amounts to adjust; a short walking visit may need less local transport than the example.

Stay near Uppsala Central for an early airport or onward train. The old centre across the river is useful for sightseeing, but check the walk and any hill between your room and the station.
🚇 Getting Around
Walk around the centre. UL's adult 75-minute ticket costs SEK 40 for journeys within its coverage. Travel into Stockholm needs the appropriate regional or combined ticket; UL and SL are different systems.
🥖 Eating for Less
Use a café or a weekday lunch menu near your day's route. Student discounts usually need proof of eligibility, so budget for the ordinary adult price unless you qualify.

Choose a museum or garden that matches your interests after the cathedral. Free cathedral admission leaves room to pay for a visit you would otherwise rush past.
