Visby Travel Guide
Visby rewards a few nights rather than a rushed turn around the harbour. Walk the old town and walls, visit the museum and leave a day for more of Gotland if the transport works. The island crossing is part of the trip, not a short suburban transfer.
At A Glance
Give the old town more than a landing stop
On the first day, settle into your room and take a short walk near the walls. Leave the longer loop and museum for the next day. Cobbles, slopes and luggage can make the arrival feel longer than the map suggests.
Fornsalen helps put the streets and island history in context. Choose it for the wetter part of the stay. Its adult entry changes with the season, so use the price for your actual month rather than a single year-round figure.
Book the mainland connection with the ferry
For Stockholm to Visby, first reach Nynäshamn, then take Destination Gotland. The sea crossing is roughly three to three and a half hours depending on the sailing. It does not include your journey from Stockholm.
Destination Gotland closes boarding 20 minutes before departure. Aim to arrive earlier, with room for the terminal walk and any checks. Book a place for every traveller and compare the selected seat or cabin product; taking a vehicle changes the price.
Check the airport bus for your exact arrival
Visby Airport lists public route 61 throughout the year, with a ride of about ten minutes into town. The additional summer shuttle is not a year-round service. Check the actual bus departure rather than assuming it meets every flight.
If it does not fit, arrange an alternative and compare the full cost with the ferry. A low airfare can stop looking cheap once separate transfers are added at both ends.
Make an island day realistic
Choose one place beyond Visby and check both outward and return journeys in Gotland's bus information. If the service leaves too little visiting time, change the outing or allow for a car rather than trying to force the timetable.
Keep your final night in reach of the departure point. Bookings during major summer events need particular care, while quieter months can mean fewer open places to eat. Neither season is automatically the better value for your trip.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.

Example for one traveller using one bed. These are chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace the stay and visits with your bookings. Add intercity travel, airport journeys and excursions separately. Local prices are in SEK. If a suitable individual bed is unavailable, use the full room price for your party.

Stay inside or just outside the walls for an easy old-town visit. Check the slope and cobbles between the harbour and your room. If arriving late, arrange check-in and food before boarding the ferry.
🚇 Getting Around
Walk in the old town and use Gotland's buses for trips beyond it. Airport route 61 runs year-round, but the extra summer airport shuttle is seasonal. A bus map does not mean every route runs frequently.
Airport transfers
Public route 61 serves the airport year-round, with a ride of about 10 minutes into town. Check its actual departure; the extra summer airport shuttle is seasonal and ended in August for 2026. Arrange an alternative if the bus does not match your flight.
🥖 Eating for Less
Compare a room with kitchen access if you will stay several nights. In quieter months, check restaurant opening days and buy arrival-night supplies before the choice narrows.
Worth Paying For
Fornsalen at Gotlands Museum is a useful first visit, especially in wet weather. Adult entry is SEK 190 from May through September and SEK 140 from October through April; under-19 s enter free.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip taking a car across if your plan is only Visby's old town. For a wider island trip, compare bus coverage, rental and ferry vehicle costs before deciding.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The mainland ferry leaves from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn, not central Stockholm. Add the mainland transfer, boarding time and the walk in Visby before planning your first activity.
