Use Çanakkale as a base for one major historical outing
The waterfront, ferry activity and compact centre make an easy arrival day. Choose accommodation near the centre when travelling without a car, but check evening noise and the route from the coach stop. The city's museums and waterfront do not require the same transport as the Gallipoli peninsula or Troy.
Decide which larger visit matters most. Gallipoli covers a wide landscape where context and transport are important. Troy is in another direction and needs its own road plan. Combining both with a city walk in one day usually produces more driving than understanding.
Cross the strait with the onward journey in mind
Ferries link the city with the European side, but the correct crossing depends on the road route and vehicle arrangement. Foot passengers should confirm how they will continue after the ferry. Weather and traffic can affect a fixed onward plan.
For a guided visit, ask what sites are included, how much time is spent outside the vehicle and where the tour ends. Do not pay for a vague “battlefields” or “Troy” label without the route.
Keep the final evening flexible before an early coach or border journey. Add guided tours, ferry crossings and distant-site transport separately to the daily allowance.

Getting Around
Walk the centre and use the current public ferry for Eceabat or Kilitbahir. Troy and the peninsula sites are not ordinary city stops; use a clear bus, taxi or guided plan.
Eating for Less
Compare menus one street back from the waterfront and ask how fish is priced. Bakeries and simple lokantas can suit an early departure better than a long harbour meal.
Worth Paying For
A knowledgeable licensed guide can add important context at Gallipoli or Troy. The Troy Museum is a separate visit worth allowing time for when current access fits.
Skip / Save Your Money
The waterfront, public Trojan Horse and city streets provide a useful introduction, but they do not replace the archaeological site or battlefield landscape.

Do not buy a battlefield or Troy tour without the exact sites, guide language, museum tickets, meal and return time. A short photo stop is not the same as an explained visit.
