Allow half a day for a comfortable move

A suitable direct train from Amsterdam Centraal to Maastricht takes about two and a half hours. Check the NS planner for your date and read the destination on the departure board before boarding. Add time to reach the station, leave the train and get to your room.

A return day trip is possible, but it means around five hours on trains before local travel. Stay overnight if you want an underground tour, an evening meal and time in the old centre without rushing. With only one day, choose a central walk and one main visit.

Domestic train tickets

Ordinary NS domestic trains do not need a reserved seat. Buy a ticket for the stations you will use or follow the OVpay check-in rules. Use the same card or device at both ends, with one payment method per traveller. Read time restrictions carefully if buying a special discounted ticket.

Get a current price for the complete journey before setting your budget, including a return if needed. There is no need to assume that booking a standard domestic fare several weeks early will make it cheaper.

Arriving on the Wyck side

Maastricht station is east of the Maas, with Wyck between the station and the river. Walk towards Sint Servaasbrug for the old centre, or leave your luggage at your accommodation first. An underground tour has a separate meeting point outside the main central streets; avoid booking it too close to the scheduled train arrival.

Use the Maastricht guide to choose between a riverside day, the bookshop and an underground visit. If continuing into Belgium, the Drielandentrein is a regional rail connection, with a ticket valid across the border required. Our Liège to Maastricht guide explains the route in the other direction; check your own departure in the operator planner.
