DB publishes direct ICE examples from Berlin Hbf to Hamburg Hbf taking about 1 hour 47 minutes to 2 hours 2 minutes. Check the selected service, station and fare conditions; other train products can differ. A Sparpreis long-distance journey uses the booked train. Compare seat reservations and local connections separately. |
Choosing your journey
Allow around one hour fifty minutes to two hours on a suitable direct ICE, plus local travel. Compare the actual train and fare for your date. Berlin Hbf and ZOB are different starting points; a coach can suit you when its saving justifies the longer journey.

A short train ride with time at either end
For most visitors, a direct train from Berlin Hbf to Hamburg Hbf is the simplest starting point. Allow roughly one hour fifty minutes to two hours on a suitable service, then add local travel and time to find your platform. DB's route page currently shows a fastest example of 1 hour 47 minutes; that is not the duration of every departure. Check the Berlin to Hamburg journey search for your date.
Choose the stations before the fare
Berlin is spread out. A train calling at Spandau may suit a western address, while Hbf may be easier for another part of the city. Buy for the station where you will actually board and check that your chosen train stops there. Leave time for Berlin Hbf's different platform levels.
In Hamburg, Hbf gives you local connections and access towards the centre. If your ticket names another Hamburg station, compare the onward journey before booking. Store your bags before a harbour walk or a timed visit.
Compare train and coach as complete journeys
| Choice | When it can suit you | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| Direct ICE | You want more time in Hamburg and a central arrival | Travel to the station and any chosen seat reservation |
| Coach | The actual fare saves enough to justify a longer journey | Travel to the listed bus stop, road delays and luggage terms |
| Regional trains | You are deliberately planning a slower journey | Every change and the extra travel time |
For coaches, use the stops on your FlixBus booking. Berlin ZOB is not Berlin Hbf. Check departure and arrival addresses before comparing the price with rail. A bus is not automatically cheaper when booked late.
Pay for the flexibility you need
DB's Super Sparpreis conditions tie the long-distance journey to the booked service. Ordinary cancellation and exchange are excluded, apart from the stated immediate-cancellation provision. Compare a more flexible fare if your arrival time is uncertain. Check whether a seat reservation and your local connections are included in the purchase.
Search the exact date and passenger group before deciding. The Deutschland-Ticket normally excludes ICE travel, so do not board this train using that subscription alone.
Make the arrival afternoon useful
An earlier departure can leave a pleasant afternoon for Speicherstadt or the waterfront. Keep a museum booking far enough from arrival to allow for delay, lunch and luggage storage. If you are following our ten-day Germany itinerary, this journey comes after two nights in Berlin.
Read the Berlin guide for station access and the Hamburg guide for your first afternoon. For the return direction, search Hamburg to Berlin separately; its departures and fares need their own check.
