Compare arrival points, not just travel times
The most useful difference between coach and train is where you finish. A coach can leave you within a short walk of the old town. The railway station is farther out, so the final walk or local connection adds to the journey.
The town's arrival information puts Prague coach travel at roughly three hours. České dráhy also lists a direct train at around three hours, but selected departures are direct; others require a change at České Budějovice. Search the date you will travel before choosing a hotel or castle entry time.
By coach
Compare RegioJet and FlixBus for departure time, price and luggage allowance. Check the Prague stop carefully: a coach may leave from Na Knížecí or another terminal, depending on the service. The train station is not the departure point for every coach.
In Český Krumlov, confirm whether you arrive at autobusové nádraží, the main bus station, or Špičák. The walking guide gives about 13 minutes from the main bus station and 15 minutes from Špičák to the central square. Allow longer with luggage and check the route to your actual room.
By train
Search Praha hl.n. to Český Krumlov in the ČD planner. Choose a suitable direct departure if it fits, or compare the complete connection through České Budějovice. Read the transfer time and any disruption notice, especially when the visit depends on an onward booking.
The railway station is about 1.7 km from the central square, roughly a 35-minute walk. Plan a local connection or taxi if that walk with bags does not suit you. A train arrival is not automatically more convenient just because both stations share the town's name.
Give the castle a separate slot
For a day trip, make sure the return service leaves enough time after your chosen visit and meal. For an overnight stay, drop the bags first and leave the arrival afternoon flexible. A castle interior tour has its own language and entry time; the museum-and-tower ticket is a different visit.

Keep onward travel realistic
If Brno is next, allow a substantial part of the following day for the move. The Czechia itinerary uses a coach option of around 4 hours 20 minutes and leaves the arrival evening light.
