Vilnius to Kaunas: travel options
Approximate direct distance: 91 km • Travel distance depends on the route and transport you choose.
Choosing your journey
The train is a practical centre-to-centre option. Compare the actual service because stopping patterns change the journey time, and allow for the walk or local bus from Kaunas station to the Old Town.

Choose a train by its arrival time
Direct LTG Link services connect Vilnius and Kaunas railway stations. Allow roughly 1–1½ hours for initial planning, with some stopping trains taking longer. The dated examples checked ranged from 1 hour 6 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes. Use LTG Link to compare your own date rather than assuming every train is the fastest one.
Allow for both station approaches
Vilnius trains leave from the main railway station, near the bus station at the southern side of the centre. In Kaunas, the railway station is on M. K. Čiurlionio Street. It is not beside the Old Town. Add the last walk or local ride when deciding which train lets you reach a museum or hotel comfortably.
Compare the complete ticket
Fares depend on the selected service, class and passenger conditions. Compare the final booking price and any refund rules before choosing. A first-class supplement is not essential for this short journey. If carrying a bicycle or needing assistance, check the arrangement for the particular train, not only the route name.
Use a day trip sensibly
Choose one main part of Kaunas for a day visit, such as the Old Town or the central art museums. A later return gives you time for lunch, but check museum closing days before buying. For an onward trip to the coast, an overnight stay avoids turning Kaunas into a rushed stop between two journeys.
Plan the arrival
Continue with the Kaunas guide when choosing a base and local visits. Add this journey separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above compares the city centres in a straight line; the route you travel can be longer.
