Planning an Alsace Christmas market trip
Check each town's market dates, book a practical base and leave time for the train rather than trying to see every village in one day.
Choose your Alsace Christmas base around the markets you most want to see. Colmar and Strasbourg can both work, but the smaller villages do not all open on the same days. A short list with time to enjoy the lights is better than an afternoon spent waiting for connections.
Check the dates town by town
The official Colmar Christmas site lists the city's six markets from 23 November to 29 December 2026. Nearby village calendars differ. For example, Ribeauvillé's medieval market is listed for 5–6 and 12–13 December, while Kaysersberg uses selected weekends. These dates were checked on 8 September 2026.
For Strasbourg, use the city's Christmas website for the next edition's confirmed dates and practical information. At the research check, the English page was still presenting preparations for the next edition. Do not apply Colmar's closing date to Strasbourg or rely on a previous year's calendar.
Special hours around Christmas Eve and Christmas Day need a separate check. Decorations remaining in place do not mean every stall is trading.
Book the base and transport together
Compare a room near the centre with one that needs a late train or tram. Staying farther away can save money, but only if the return service and total fare work for your plans. Mulhouse or Basel may be useful alternatives for some routes, without guaranteeing a fixed percentage saving.
Use SNCF TER Grand Est for rail connections and the local market site for seasonal shuttles. Confirm the exact operating dates before choosing a village without a railway station.
Leave room for a warm indoor meal and a break from standing. Wear footwear suited to wet streets, keep your bag small in crowded areas and avoid booking the last possible return after a distant village visit.
