Planning a winter trip in Central Europe
Separate a Christmas market visit from a January or February city break, and leave enough daylight and indoor time for both.
A December market trip and a February city break need different plans. Markets bring their own dates, crowds and prices. After they close, the same city may suit museums and slower neighbourhood visits, but winter does not automatically mean cheap rooms or empty attractions.
Check the market's actual end date
Christmas markets often finish at different times, even within one region. The Colmar market calendar lists its six city markets through 29 December 2026, while nearby village markets use other dates. That is why “Christmas in Alsace” is not one continuous event everywhere.
For Vienna, Prague, Budapest or another city, use the local organiser's current programme. New Year travel can remain busy after some markets have closed. Book accommodation with an easy route back after an evening out, especially if the last local service is early.
Give daylight to the outdoor part
Plan a park, riverside or old-town walk for the brighter hours, then move indoors for a museum or meal. Snow is possible in some places, but a white winter scene is never guaranteed in a lowland city. Rain and wet or icy paving may be the more relevant packing problem.
Choose footwear with grip, bring layers and leave room for a warm break. A short route can be more enjoyable than a full-day walk that leaves everyone cold. If you add a thermal bath, check its age rules, booking arrangements and indoor facilities separately rather than assuming every pool suits every visitor.
Keep mountain travel separate
