The Underrated Affordability of Armenia

Armenia is one of the oldest civilizations on earth, yet it remains remarkably undiscovered by mainstream mass tourism. Its compact geography makes it simple to base yourself in Yerevan and explore dramatic mountain gorges, volcanic crater lakes, and UNESCO monasteries on inexpensive day trips.

A budget traveler can easily navigate Armenia for €26 to €32 per day, while mid-range travelers spending €60 to €72 per day will enjoy private hotel rooms, rental cars, and restaurant dining.

Yerevan Transit and Airport Hacks

  • The 23-Cent Metro: Yerevan underground metro consists of 10 stations along a single north-south line connecting the railway station (Sasuntsi David) with central Republic Square and the Opera House. A single token costs 100 AMD (0.23 Euros). Contactless bank cards are accepted directly at turnstiles.
  • Airport Bus 201: Zvartnots International Airport is connected to central Yerevan by express Bus 201 operating every 30 minutes for just 300 AMD (around 0.70 Euros). Taxis using the official GG or Yandex apps cost around 2,500 to 3,500 AMD (6 to 8 Euros); avoid street taxi drivers asking 10,000 AMD in the arrivals hall.

Budget Meals: Lahmajun and SAS Food Court

  • Lahmajun (Armenian Pizza): Ultra-thin round dough topped with finely minced spiced lamb or beef, tomato paste, garlic, and fresh herbs, baked in a fiery stone oven. Spritz with fresh lemon juice, roll it up, and eat warm. Freshly baked lahmajun costs 400 to 600 AMD (1.00 to 1.40 Euros) at shops like Gaidz or Mer Taghe.
  • SAS Food Court: The 24-hour food court inside large SAS supermarkets offers fresh hot barbecue counters, lavash flatbreads, pelmeni, and salads where a full dinner costs under 4.50 Euros.
  • Khorovats (Barbecue): Pork skewers, grilled river trout (ishkhan), and roasted vegetables (khorovats salad) served with fresh lavash at neighborhood taverns cost around 2,200 to 3,500 AMD (5 to 8 Euros).
