A few days in Tbilisi and a few nights in the mountains need different budgets. Walking around the capital can keep daily transport spending low. Reaching a mountain base, arranging a trail transfer or changing plans because of the weather adds costs that a single daily figure tends to hide.

These amounts are illustrative allowances in Georgian lari. They are not current hotel or menu quotes. Costs are per person, with two adults sharing a private room.

Make room for the mountains
Stepantsminda, often referred to as Kazbegi, works better as a separate stay than as a rushed collection of roadside photographs. Allow for the journey there, accommodation, meals and any transport to a walk's starting point. A room with dinner included may compare favourably with a cheaper room requiring separate transport to eat.

In Tbilisi, order to suit your appetite rather than assuming every dish is an individual portion. Confirm any service charge on the menu and leave flexibility for a meal you actually want, instead of making every dinner a cost-saving exercise.
