Moldova is approximately 30 to 40 percent cheaper across everyday travel expenses than Romania. While Bucharest has seen noticeable price convergence with Western Europe over recent years, Chisinau remains remarkably affordable for lodging and dining.
A comfortable private studio apartment in central Chisinau rents for 30 to 45 Euros per night, whereas a comparable apartment in central Bucharest costs 55 to 80 Euros. A three-course dinner with local wine in Chisinau rarely exceeds 18 Euros, compared to 30 to 35 Euros in Bucharest.
How to Travel Between Them: Train Prietenia #105
The most rewarding way to connect both capitals is the Prietenia (Friendship) overnight sleeper train #105/106, which has run between Chisinau and Bucharest since Soviet times:
- Schedule: Departs Chisinau daily around 17:20, arriving Bucharest Gara de Nord at 06:30 the next morning.
- Fares: A 4-berth second-class couchette costs around 30 to 34 Euros. A private 2-berth first-class compartment costs around 45 to 50 Euros.
- The Wheel Gauge Exchange: Moldova uses broad 1,520 mm track gauge, while Romania uses standard 1,435 mm European gauge. At the border station of Ungheni, passenger carriages are individually hoisted on giant hydraulic jacks with passengers inside while technicians unbolt the broad wheelsets and roll standard European bogies underneath. The entire mechanical process takes about two hours and is a fascinating engineering spectacle.
