Bucharest on a budget: plan the room, transport and paid visits
Build a useful Bucharest budget in lei, choose the right metro ticket and book the Palace of Parliament without crowding the rest of your day.
A Bucharest budget is easier to control when you settle the room and one main paid visit first. Food and local travel are smaller decisions, but they still need a place in the total. Keep the calculation in Romanian lei, shown as RON, so that you can compare it with the prices you see.
Choose a room for the whole stay
Compare the total booking price, including any compulsory charges, cancellation terms and whether breakfast is included. A cheap room can become less convenient if every evening ends with a long paid ride home.
Look at the actual walk to a useful metro station and the route from your arrival point. If you are a light sleeper, read recent comments about evening noise before choosing a room in the busiest part of the old town. Two people sharing one room split that room cost; a solo traveller pays it in full.
Use a budget you can change
Here is a one-person day with a Palace of Parliament visit. The room, food and extra amounts are chosen planning allowances, not surveyed prices or a promise that a particular hotel is available.

Replace the room and meal allowances with your choices. The palace ticket already appears in this day, so do not add another general attractions allowance for the same visit. Airport travel and journeys to other cities are outside the example. A departure day without another hotel night needs a different total.

Match the metro ticket to your movements
Metrorex lists 5 RON for a metro journey, 40 RON for ten journeys and 12 RON for a 24-hour metro ticket. Two separate single journeys cost 10 RON; three cost 15 RON, so the 24-hour product may suit a busier day.
Check coverage before buying. A metro-only ticket does not automatically cover the surface network. The listed integrated metro and surface products are 7 RON for 120 minutes or 18 RON for 24 hours. Read activation and validity instructions for the product you choose.
Walking can connect nearby sights, but do not plan every cross-city journey on foot just to avoid a fare. In heat or rain, a well-chosen ride can make the rest of the day much easier.
Reserve the parliament visit before arranging everything around it
The official visitor service lists the standard adult tour at 85 RON. For groups of one to nine people, follow its telephone reservation procedure 24 hours ahead; larger groups use the published email process at least three days ahead.
Check the entry instructions and required identity document when reserving. Allow time for access and security, and use the visitor entrance specified by the operator. The terrace and basement are not part of the currently available visit.
Book a comfortable slot, then arrange lunch and a nearby walk. A timed tour is more useful as the main appointment of the day than as a stop squeezed between two distant neighbourhoods.
Keep meals simple without chasing an invented daily minimum
Read the menu and serving size before sitting down. A bakery breakfast, a substantial lunch and a lighter evening meal may suit you; another traveller will prefer a longer dinner. Check drinks and any service charge as well as the main dish.
